If you haven't seen this yet, its quite an embarrassment to Chicago sports media.

Rock Mamola writes that Hull and Mikita aren't deserving of statues outside the UC: http://www.chicagono...dans-house.html

And here is my rebuttal that I wrote this morning (I couldn't help myself) : http://www.chicagono...er-statues.html

Your capacity numbers, did you go by percentage or total attendance? I only ask because I believe for a basketball game they can hold about 800 more.

I went by capacity. The Bulls do indeed hold more and therefore have a higher average attendance (this season, not last season.) The Hawks are averaging 107% capacity though. What that tells me is there are more people willing to pack it to the rafters and stand for a Hawks game than for a Bulls game. There are well over 1,000 people standing at every Hawks game on average; Not so for the Bulls. Bulls attendance numbers are very good this year though!

He used to produce the Big Mouth Norths show, I don't know which of those idiots rubbed off on the other more, probably mutual but Mamola sure got a whole lot of shit in the Replies section. I think only 1 person agreed with him. He has no good logic to support his article. If hes looking for attention with this blog , I don't think this is the kind of attention he had in mind.

Yeah that's what I figured, I just wanted to make sure that apples to apples was happening, because if you were going to by numbers well overall it would be distorted because the bulls can hold more. Nice piece though.

Just because people are talking about him does'nt mean its a good thing. This type of attention puts him on my "pay no mind" list. Not that I ever read anything by him in the first place. But I would put him on the same level as Rozner and Haugh who have been on that list for quite a long time.

Thanks!

I didn't put it in the article, but its also worth noting that the demand on the secondary market for a Hawks ticket is double what a Bulls ticket is right now. Despite the Rose hoopla, the Bulls being a contender, etc. You can still get a seat for 25 bucks for most games.

That's interesting. Did you also look at/take into account the starting price of the tickets? I have no idea what the season ticket prices for the Bulls are compared to the hawks.

Bulls STH get absolutely ripped off. Pretty sure the cheapest seat is 35 dollars. Like I said, Stubhub usually has those seats for less than 30 as the game approaches. No reason to buy Bulls season tickets other than for playoff privileges. Buying them is a bad investment otherwise.

To the article all I can say is wow.

Bobby Hull was great on the ice, not so great off the ice.

I have mixed feelings on the subject.

I sorta have mixed feelings about Hull as well. I guess they count on the majority of the current fans not knowing anything bad about the past.

But then, MJ wasn't exactly a saint, either. And Pippen (whom I loved as a player) had his fair share of problems, on and off the court. And both of those guys have/will have statues outside the UC. So I'm not gonna view Hull's off-ice problems as an absolute bar to his having a statue there.

A lot better men have gotten away with a lot worse things, so I'll forgive him.

He could be beating them both at the same time.

Perhaps a statue of Hull holding his 2nd ex over the edge of a balcony would be the best represntation.

http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Hull_Bobby.html

Hull's life away from the ice did not always have the same high that his playing gave him. His first marriage ended while he was still a teenager. His second marriage -- to figure skater Joanne McKay, whom he wed in 1960 -- was filled with charges of mental and physical abuse. In an incident in Hawaii in 1966, Joanne said her husband held her over the balcony after hitting her in the head with her shoe.

After several more abusive incidents, she filed for divorce in 1970. However, she agreed to a reconciliation. In 1978, Hull threatened her with a loaded shotgun. Two years later they were divorced, a development which estranged Hull from his five children for several years.

He married his third wife, Deborah, in 1984. Two years later, Hull, who appeared to have been drinking, was charged with assault and battery against her although she later dropped the complaint. However, Hull pleaded guilty to taking a swing at one of the arresting officers. He was fined $150 and placed on six months court supervision.

December 11, 1986|Associated Press

WILLOWBROOK, Ill. — Former hockey star Bobby Hull was charged with assault and battery after allegedly hitting his wife during a late-night argument in the parking lot of their condominium, police said Wednesday.

"There was evidence he had struck his wife in the face. She had some contusions, some swelling," Police Chief Steven List said. Police received a complaint of noise from an unidentified neighbor early Monday and sent a squad car to the scene, List said.

Oh, holding one over a balcony and beating the other at the same time is pretty "heroic" looking in an ancient Greek kind of way.
