SIERA, and for more than 1 player...

And why exactly does SIERA do it for you? I ask because I have never even heard you mention it before.

I also find it funny that Garza's SIERA and FIP are only separated by .18.

Edit 2: FIP on FG also calculates itself to ERA like SIERA doesn't (unless they changed it without notifying anyone which I wouldn't put past BP). FIP with the usual 3.2 coefficient has him at 3.22 or only .04 off of each other.

So what is it that you have to subscribe to on BP? Because I just went here

Baseball Prospectus | Statistics | Custom Statistics Reports: Pitcher Season

and it was able to sort the SIERA leaders for me. Am I missing something here?

So FIP says that of starters with 50+ IP, that Garza is the 28th best pitcher in the league. But SIERA says he is 15th with the same requirements. Yet you think FIP sucks because it is too good to him?

You mostly subscribe for the articles and PECOTA I think. BP has changed a lot since FG came into town. I wasn't aware BP had added SIERA to their sortable stats though thats pretty cool.

I will fully admit I am not a huge fan of BP.

I just like that SIERA is more in-depth... I don't think FIP sucks because of him, I just don't prefer it to other DIPS stats... it's not about him.

Also, why do they say that Garza's SIERA is higher than your excel projector?

Could be differences in FB and LD. I used FG's numbers they may use somewhere else and don't really know how the feel on fliners.

That or I fucked something up.

BP will never show their numbers and I wouldn't be surprised if the SIERA they are using is totally different from the one on their stat page.

now tying this to the beginning of the thread

do either FIP,SIERA,or ERA or some zoning combination of the three in any way support garza being an all star? Honestly i think Marmol will be our representative...castro still needs to improve his glove...still a little young i think he's a year or two away

this thread is actually about Castro ;)

And no it probably doesn't support it because of the amazing set of pitchers in the NL. CO only said Garza should make the team because he has been our best player, something he probably didn't think all the way through.

To add even more confusion to the pot, I put in BP's FB and GB numbers. Interestingly enough according to BP he had more GB and less FB vs. FG. That alone increased his SIERA by about 1, which still isn't in line with what BP has, even using their own numbers. I is confuzzled.

very true...i doubt garza could crack the rotation with guys like greinke, lincecum, kershaw, roy halladay, hamels, hanson, etc.

garza has done well..and has arguably been our best pitcher(though i think dempster has been the best since around mid-late may)..but that doesnt validate his spot on an all star roster(which tells you a little about the inconsistency and injury issues this rotation has had)...the best pick is marmol or castro...if i had to guess i think marmol will make it

Yeah I found BP's numbers. That changed things a bit.

Mostly though I forgot a parenthesis which was probably the bigger issue.

I got it pretty close now but it is still off by about .09. I will reupload it shortly.

I can't disagree with anything you said.
