Steelers Make It Official As They Start Shopping TJ Watt

"Obviously they are inquiring to see what that might be," Kaboly said. "If it gets to the point where there is no return, maybe that second round pick becomes very handsome... I am sure that's doing their due diligence there at this point."

The holdup is the guaranteed money in the last year of the deal. Dunno if he's an ideal DE for the Dennis Allen scheme but dude is an absolute monster who can get to the QB.

Watt wants near 40m.......

I dont see that happening with the Bears.

We only have the money if we backload a deal

Similar to hendrickson, I'm not sure you want to be paying a 34/35 year old guy a fuckton of money when that is when you will have to pay all your young talent.

Here's where Poles 4d chess comes in, don't need to pay your young talent if they're not all that talented!

Brisker is the first that'll walk.

Didnt know you got the script from @zabavka

I'm not even worried about brisker, his contract would be peanuts compared to the grand scheme of things even if he stays healthy and plays well.

When TJ's massive cap hit would come in is when guys like rome, ozzy, caleb, burden, lovlenad etc. would have to be paid. Positions that actually make big $$

Sure you can say they will suck, but its a major reason why I'm not a fan w/ the hendrickson trade. TJ Watt is clearly a better player but I dont believe this team is an elite edge away from superbowl since we dont even know if caleb is a good NFL QB much less a great one.

Caleb could easily still be the worst QB in the nfl on throws over 10 yards and massively handicap the upside of this offense, in that scenario we would have another 2019 scenario where we effed the cap to go all in on a qb who wasnt the answer.

Feel like if you make a trade like this, you do it at the deadline if/when you know caleb has improved drastically and the team is ready to take that leap

I'm still crossing my fingers the cowboys start the season sucking and put micah parsons up for trade. Now thats someone I'd love to pay 40m+ year

Jones Stevenson Johnson Scott Dexter and Sweat can come off the books sooner than later. The last three years under Poles are a complete anomaly. It's like those three years never happened with his new extension. He can restart the rebuild all over and only overpay moderately good players like Wright Odunze and Gordon.

Then he can load the team with more Robinson Booker and Velus Jones Jr. They'll be unstoppable.

Dexter is not going anywhere

Some of you miss the fact he was on a pro bowl pace last year prior to billings getting hurt

Also, gordon is not a moderately good player, he's on of the top slot corners in the entire NFL

You wouldn't be paying him all that money at 34/35 years old if you understand how the guaranteed money in any NFL deal works. Remember? :)

You can cut Sweat after this year. It's the most likely scenario.

Why would they do that?

Sweat was 5th in pressure rate last year and has been consistently racking up pressures his entire career.

He was on pace to have the same # of pressures as he did in 2023 if he played the same # of snaps, all while being injured.

They dont have the money to pay him now. They had like ~15m in cap space, and next year isnt pretty either.

So either they restructure contracts like DJ Moore to be backloaded, or they backload his deal.

I'm not a fan of either, as noted above we dont know if caleb is actually a good nfl qb yet much less elite. Last thing we should be doing is effing the cap/future to go all in like pace did - If its at the deadline and the bears look very good and caleb looks great then sure

NFL teams have many ways to create cap space but yes most ways will hurt in the future in some way or another.

Dexter was a 3T and this is a completely different defensive scheme that values different traits and skills.

Pressures are extremely important. Sweat has always pressured the qb but not finish, those still lead to errant throws and interceptions...

Well yes, they can figure out to fit any player under the cap. I'm just saying its not really smart to do so especially when you have a QB who you dont know is good yet

I would support trading and paying for Watt. He'd instantly be the best player on the roster and solve the pass rushing issue.

Pressures are important but getting the sack is more important. As i've said since we traded for Sweat, he's never had double digit sacks besides the season we traded for him when he had 12 between Wash and the Bears. He should be getting more sacks. Hopefully that will start to happen beginning this season now that we have a much better IDL.

Watt is a beast. For a 2nd rounder I'd do that all day assuming Allen likes his style. They already spent to be a contender this year so this team is built to win in the next 3 years or have a major reload. A lot of 3 year deals coming off the books by the time you have to choose who to extend and you can probably cut Watt by then if you don't want him.

2nd rounder ain't shit! This isn't a 2 1st rounder trade like Mack
