In addition to having a flat tax, you simply can't allow individuals or corporations to evade paying. GE should be paying just like I do. But instead they are a publicly traded company that now records its HQ as 'offshore' so they get away with paying nothing. (the thing about a refund was BS, if you didn't know that by now) But they still got away with paying $0.00 on billions of dollars of sheer good ole profit. WHY?

Plain and simple, we have to revolutionize the way we collect taxes here in the states, or just collect them the way they were intended and not with a million loopholes.

How did I do? I got fucked. In the ass. HARD. I love how the government says "holy shit, you don't make any money at all, here let's help you" and then turns around and asks for so much back. I'm still on unemployment because my part time wages are so low, and usually I get back a few hundred.. but this year between federal and state I owe over $2,000. Over two fucking thousand. Pass the lube please; my raisin hurts.

I was going to make a smart ass comment about baby daddies, rug rats and the earned income credit handout, but I'll spare you and everyone else actually paying taxes the aggravation.

Why is it that unemployment (paid as a tax) is then taxed to the individual? And why isn't the tax collected prior to payment in other words, taken out of the check?

You have the option to pay the taxes out of the check, or take all of the money up front if you are really hurting. It's taxed at 10-13 percent. Where people get in trouble is if they take the full sum instead of making sure their state and federal was taken out. I had them take it out and it actually helped me a lot. As I said, I'm getting a good chunk back, plus my CPA found about 1k in new credits people could do this year.

If it is going to be taxed then witholding should be mandatory. Without even knowing the numbers I can imagine that are huge somes of people who do not even bother filing. From their prospective if you are collecting unemployment they are probably really under a financial crunch and would rather have the larger amount up front.

I'd agree with that except those that are making 100k per year or more. IE the Generals, Admirals, ect ect ect..

Remember housing is free, medical is free.....

There is also something if you are working out of the country for 300 or more days of the year you are exempt as well. At least I think that's how that worked.

It's not as free as you think. Housing is only "free" if you live on base, if you are in an area that offers it, and doesnt have a waiting list a mile long. And although it is getting better, for the most part housing sucks. If you live in military housing, you do not get your housing allowance, in DC this was over $2K for me. I was paying rent/losing my allowance for a 3 bedroom townhouse that was right at 1000 sq ft. Used to be water/garbage/electricity was free. Now, if you go over the "average" usage of the housing area you live in, you pay. When they calculate this number, they include the units that are not occupied. Everything is privatized when it comes to housing now, which is just like renting in town. Maintenance sucks. Unless the place is on fire, they dont show up for days.

I'd also add (at least while I was on AD 10 years ago) that alot of base housing is very old and/or poorly built. I was stationed at March AFB, CA in the mid 90s as it was being closed. Some of the base housing was deemed unfit to live in after the base closed. Couldn't be converted to public housing after the base closed because it was so bad. Another example; Quonset huts were still being used for base housing at RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, UK in the late 80s.

Most people I knew in the military preferred to live off base.

See none of that I knew. Instead of just saying I was false, you explained it.

Thanks!

they are getting better, but there is still some really shitty housing. The place we were in in DC for the first 2.5 yrs was absolute shit. They had been built during WWII/Korea time frame and are considered Historical Landmarks, so they can't tear them down, and they hadn't been refurbished since the 70s. They just started to do it before we left, and that is why we lived in newer housing for the last 6 months we were there.

The other thing that absolutely sucks about base housing, EVERYONE is up in your business. Also, because you are "on post" anything your wife or kid does, can adversly affect your career. That is why most people live off post. When I was a kid and my Dad was in, we only lived in base housing twice, and then only because we had too. (Holy Loch Scotland, and Guantanamo Bay Cuba), DC is the only place during my career we lived on post.

Hey dick! I tried to be nice about it at least. I didn't have current information so I didn't want to try. My information came from living off post in Clarksville, TN with my first wife back in 2001-2003 when we were stationed at Ft. Campbell. We both got a housing allowance of about $600 a month and our rent was $625, so that coupled with utilities and such gave us about an extra $300 in 'cash' every month. If they had housing available to us on post (waiting list was too long) we would have gotten like $100 each plus food money, but I can't remember what that amount was.

When I was in Korea, I still got the housing money and 'married' pay because she was living in the townhouse off post until she deployed for the start of the Iraq war.

Better?

Is there any pleasing you, ******...nozzle?

Oh, I almost forgot to brag: earned approx 110K, have pre-tax 401K, pay more taxes with each paycheck...wait for it...received 10K plus change back from the IRS. Not bad. I was able to pay off some credit card debt with that. I now owe on my house and car...just the way it is supposed to be, right?

I knew I would be bad about putting shit aside for taxes, so the short time I was on it about 4 years ago - I just had the state take it out automatically and was glad I did.

Yeah I was the same way. I learned the hard way (only a bit) from my wife not putting away taxes from some 1099 consulting stuff she did. Pissed me off.
