Avs host Hawks in start of home-and-home series

Sergei J. Feldman - NHL.com Staff Writer

Season Series: This is the first of four meetings between the two Western Conference foes, who will meet again in Chicago on Saturday night in the second half of the home-and-home series. The Avalanche won three of the four meetings last season and put up 15 goals in those games. The Hawks' lone win in a 4-0 shutout in the last game.

Big Story: While the thought of last season's struggles against the Avs weigh slightly on the minds of some Hawks, the goal will be to continue playing solid hockey, as the team has amassed seven of a possible 10 points thus far. Meanwhile, the Avs aim to prove their 5-1-0 start to the new season is no fluke, and what better way to do that than to do so against the club many feel can return to the Stanley Cup Final?

Team Scope:

Blackhawks: Since losing to the Dallas Stars on opening night, the Hawks have not dropped a game in regulation, going 3-0-1 in that span. In their most recent game, against the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night, the Blackhawks demonstrated why they figure to be one of the Western Conference's most dominant clubs. Chicago relied on a balanced attack to lead the way in a 5-2 win, with three players earning two points. The Hawks outshot Phoenix 35-16, giving goaltender Corey Crawford an easy night. As impressive as the balance was, the ability to play opportunistic hockey resonated most with coach Joel Quenneville, who pointed to a shorthanded tally as the reason for the win. Dave Bolland, the goal-getter, agreed.

"It's a huge advantage when you score on the (penalty kill)," he said. "It gets the guys going, gets everybody going on the bench there."

Avalanche: The Avs won just three times in their last 13 road games last season on the way to a second-half collapse. This season has been completely different. After dropping a 3-0 decision to the Detroit Red Wings at home on opening night, the Avs went on the road and won all five games, capping the sweep with a 3-2 overtime win at Toronto on Monday. The Avs scored just once in their first two games, but have averaged over four goals per game since. But perhaps the biggest catalyst for their success thus far has been the play of 23-year-old goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who was brought in this offseason to be the No. 1 goaltender. Coach Joe Sacco believed confidence has been the key to Varlamov's solid start, which includes a 3-1-0 record.

"He's a quietly confident type of kid," he said. "He doesn't get rattled easily. He's very confident in his abilities."

Who's Hot: David Jones, who got the OT winner in Toronto, leads Colorado with four goals. Bolland tops the Hawks with four.

Injury Report: Forward Peter Mueller, who missed all of last season with a concussion, has yet to play this season due to an undisclosed injury. He took part in all of Wednesday's practice, but coach Joe Sacco said he won't play Thursday. Forward Brandon Yip is still sidelined with a broken forearm. … The Blackhawks skate into Colorado with a healthy roster.

Stat Pack: Despite being blanked in their opener, the Avs are tops in the Western Conference and second overall to Pittsburgh with 20 goals scored. … Colorado has won four of the last five meetings with the Hawks at the Pepsi Center. … The Avs' 5-0-0 road swing was the best in franchise history for a trip of five games or more.

Puck Drop: While understandably delighted by his team's play on the trip, Sacco isn't singing hosannas to his team just yet.

"Good start to the year for us, but now we have to move ahead here," he Sacco. "We don't want to put it behind us -- we want to reflect on the things that we did well, the positive things and carry them over here moving forward, but we have to look at our opponent Thursday night."

Lets see...the Avalanche beat 5 teams...Boston 1-0, Columbus 3-2, ottawa 7-1, Montreal 6-5, and Toronto 3-2. Not a lot of really challenging teams there. Boston...having problems. Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto...anyway. If the Hawks come out with their intensity they have...I see no problem in this game.

SWEET!!!

Avs somehow have started the season off as giants (tv probably hit on it a little). Time to send them back down to earth.

Avs special teams right now are disgustingly good, esp their powerplay. Probably explains their strong start also. Hawks powerplay needs to buck up we should be where the Avs are in that percentage.

Should actually be a good game this one.

Alright well PHX proved to be a pretty simple game which is always a good thing, but I would like a challenge tomorrow night. I really wanna see our D get back to the old way #2-#7, with the other intangibles filling the rest with a firm grip. I mean why did we even pick up Lepisto? The guy has yet to hit the 10 minutes played mark this year, and frankly I think he has a good potential on our team. I thought last night would have been a good chance to play him against his old team.

I would love to see this D lineup tomorrow night:

2-7

8-4

5-20

Obviously our first pair is top notch, but at this point Leddy has looked great and is now getting serious minutes, I think him and Hammer would be a fine 2nd D line. Then the rest of the D is rounded out with 2 solid D men who could be very effective playing 9-12 minutes a night. Basically its getting Keith and Seabrook back together, Keith really hasn't looked the same without Seabrook paired with him and I think we get a lot more production out of them paired together, then the 2 separate lines their on now.

If anything I would think Leddy/Hammer would be a spitting image of Keith/Seabs years ago in their first few years.

I agree with all of that PSR.

Keith had a few gaffs last night but still had a monster game. Before the gaff leading to the goal he was shooting the puck at everything!

That said I agree he'd be better off with #7.

Why Q refuses is frustrating.

I mean his stats came from the 5 on 3, and PP. He had a lot of other opportunities, but we know how he has looked overall to start the year and it is eerily reminiscent to that of last year. I just think you do the team a whole lot more good putting the pairings how one would expect a coach to when you have the the most dominant D pair. Right now were sitting looking at "potentially" the most dominant pair, that shit is enough to make a fan pull their hair out.

Toronto is damn good and 4-0-1. Boston is far from "not challenging".

This is the first true test for the Hawks.

Please tell me you didn't just say Toronto was damn good. Their 4 wins were all by one goal (except the first game) and they beat Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary. Real tough challenge there.

not to mention they had seven games off (SEVEN) Between Ottawa and Calgary.

Toronto's top line is damn good right now. One of the best lines going in the league.

That has to count for something

yes, I seem to be the only person in Toronto that thinks it's a BAD THING if 85% of your scoring comes from one line.

The avs are a fast team. So yeah, I'd rather see Lepistopheles instead of O'donnel, and Stalberg instead of Olesz.

Play a full 60 and play like they did agianst Phoenix and we should come out fine.

I don't know what to think of this game just like didn't know about the yots, but hey lets see if they can reproduce the effort they gave in AZ. As much as their 23 year old goalie is getting hype, it might be cause of teams not seeing him before. we need to test him early and often, once we get a goal in I think he folds.

There were lulls against Phoenix, and the Hawks survived it.

The Yotes game was one of those weird games in which the Hawks dominated, but bounces seemed to go the Yotes way. Bad ice. Hopefully, there's 18 feet of snow in Denver tonight.

No such luck, but temps are much better for hockey than in Phoenix. Supposed to be 69 today and 45 overnight. Btw, I love it when weather.com has the high temperature listed as, lets say 68 degrees, and the current temperature is 69 degrees.
