Fundamentally this is a time based sport and play/time is constant other than between whistles. When time expires, time is up. Just like it is in just about every other time based sport....
...I know that in Football if there is one second on the clock and a team runs a play the the play keeps going past the 1 second as long as the play is still active. But keep in mind the clock does not stop for each whistle, and unlike every other time based sport there is not constant play when time is running. It is more of a "move" based sport.

finally someone with some actuall prospective on how it might or might not work. I was also going to bring football in the picture and mention on how the team who snaps the ball then the clock runs out is still in motion untill it is stopped. Yes I can see how it might or might not work in the NHL. What I mentioned is not so far feted, and might be a reality in the future.
