Yea I'm still in Chicago. I have a house in Montana that some day I'll maybe spend my summers if the wife allows it.

I'll "look after" that house in Montana during the summer if you want...

Two things I took away from this game:

1) The Emery experiment should be over.

2) If Pirri doesn't make the squad it will be a fucking travesty.

It's pre-season and pre-season can help in some evaluations. It's time to get a little bit more critical of some players who are trying to win spots on the team. 2 guys come straight to my mind.

1) Emery has won nothing. Tonight was a horrible game from him and I don't often do this BUT I am going to be ballsy enough and pin this loss entirely on his shoulders. He was god awful and has yet to play one period of pre-season hockey where you can feel comfy about him playing here. Haven't seen one single period of strong goaltending from him. Sorry I just say what I see. I was rooting for Emery to do well...but he just isn't. Hard to think of what our back up position is going to look like. At this point Cory better be ready for 70+ games. I know I am being a bit over-reactive here. But the backup job now has me concerned.

2) Kruger has shown no improvements from last years short stint. I get nothing from him at any end of the game. He isn't ready. he wasn't ready last year when he was called in and he isn't ready now. Swallow your pride on this one Bowman and make the cut and give him the time he needs on the farm to adjust to NA style and to get some hunger in him. As of right now he is too slow, a step behind, his hands are hard and he has shown little if any passion. Experiment over. Don't care how you fix the center depth but Kruger isn't the answer. Sharp at center sounds really good.

Bonus complaints...

1a)Brunnette please show up. Toews and Kane set you up brilliantly all night. Find that finishing touch please. You are in the right spots and your positioning is great but please get that finish. If you do the powerplay could be deadly. 5 on 5 though I never notice you.

1b)Hossa needs a linemate and a real center. Get back soon Sharpy. And what is the extent of Bollands injury? Always concerns me when I hear Bolland and injury.

Positives

1) Pirri despite the penalty at the end of the game was outstanding!!! Strong pre-season from Pirri. That's the sort of fire and talent I wish we had with a guy like Kruger. I knwo Pirri gets a little heat for the delay of game call and the last penalty of the night but he more than made up for it.

2) Saad with another solid performance. This kid is on the roster. Pirri also if I had my way.

3) Bickells best game of the post season although he disappeared in the second period (but horrible goalkeeping can make an entire team disappear for a while). Was a strong first period and a strong 3rd period.

Pre-season is over in a week. Time for some cuts and some serious critique.

I stick by what I said in the chat. Hawks dominated 2 periods of hockey. The goalie lost the other period and the game. And Johnson was great for the Pens.

Oh god Havoc is going to explode!!!

If you saw Emery Shaky with views for 2 periods that mean you were away from him for the 2nd period when he showed an example of how not to play goalkeeper. Ugh he looks horrible. I am totally disappointed because I wanted the guy to do well. I think he knows how bad he has been also. There has been this look of self disgust on his face after each goal. Guys either fighting the puck far too hard or he just doesn't have it anymore. Which is odd because he wasn't all horrible with the Ducks for the few games he played last year. Regardless my confidence level towards him is extremely low right now.

Would have been three more but they were stopped by Emery's best friend the Post. Goal #3 was 100% Montedor. Have not been impressed with him ONE BIT.

Goal #2 was TBO esque.... WTF Emery? I know Seabs called you out but tell him to **** OFF! Stay IN YOUR NET!!!

Goal #1 looked to rocket twice before going in. Of course Sullivan. **** him.

With Smith and Stalberg out Pirri and Sadd should make the team.

Get fucking Kaner back on Wing and Q if you Start Sharp at Wing you are a dumb ****.

Opening night roster.....

Saad-Toews-Kane

Brunette-Sharp-Hossa

Frolik-Bolland-Bickell

Mayers-Pirri-Carcillo.

Don't give a **** about Olesz.

Seabrook-Keith

Hjarlmarsson-Leddy

Lepisto-Montedor

Scott/Odonnell/

And yea I'm going to agree

Crawford/Salak. If Emery stays and Salak goes down it's because they want Salak to play 50+ games and that I really do understand. We won the Cup with Huet sitting on the bench. Emery is better than Huet IMO.

And TCD he was lights out with the Ducks almost the entire time he played there last year. 7-2 and the sole reason they made the playoffs. That said, back up here I don't think will matter much. Crawford is going to play 60 games without injury.

I like those lines.

Work for me. And I think you can rotate Brunette and Saad up and down those LW at ones liking.

I would like to see Frolik stay put at 3rd line with Bolland at center. These 2 showed some good chemistry last year when Bolland returned and I think that will come again.

Agree on Olesz also. I still think he can produce with the talent here but I simply see an unneeded body right now. Obviously that will probably change.

But yah like those lines. No issues.

The main problem with Saad is if he stays past 9 games he's here all year and you start his RFA clock now. When Smith and Stalberg are ready they are going to need a spot in the line up. Right now there are too many bodies. All three Sharp, Stalberg and Smith when back create a roster issue, knowing Saad has to stay.

Trade? Who goes? Who stays? Wierd start to the year with so many bodies here.

Yah that damn 9 games throws a monkey wrench into things. Let's wait and see what Saad does in some regular season games. May not be too hard of a decision come the time Smith and Stalberg return. As great as Saad has been we have all been guilty of counting our chickens before they hatch. for all we know Saad may start slowing off (although it doesn't look like he will right now).

Not sure if there has been the same level of compete for a roster spot in the last few years with so much talent competing for it. Had Smith remained healthy right now the choices would probably even more difficult. If Saad continues this then maybe we have to allow Smith to return to the farm (and probably not a bad idea right away as a means of evaluating the extent of his injury anyways).

I don't think our management and coached were even expecting this sort of play from Saad and Pirri right now.

I don't think a trade is an option right now. Don't think many teams are going to be pulling trade deals this early in the season even if it means only having to deal out picks.

Bit of a situation. We are going to be well off what ever the decisions are. I suspect Saad will probably trail off a little as the season starts. Just the nature of the beast with many of these young guys. If so then back to juniors after the 9 game try out or before that ends. If he shines then the real decision has to be made. As of right now we are good..no we are great!!!

Team really does look good. Massive positive signs so far. Not too many concerns.

They can't drop Smith to AHL if Saad continues to play well? Or Stalberg?

Emery...too slow, can't bounce off the ice quickly, and just too damn bad and old!

The question is do keep Emery to play 20 games and let Salak get 60 games in the AHL? It's a tough call!

If Pirri is going to stay, I'd play him on the second line, and move Sharp to the front line with Kane and Toews.

If he can make things work with Hossa, we REALLY have a nice problem.

I say send Saad down, we can't keep him past 9 games...once we get bodies back, is he going to rot in the box all year? Send him back to Saginaw for the year, keep Piiri and Olesz

Smith yes, Stalberg would have to clear waivers. Stalberg was also having a very good camp.

I agree TCD I think they have been trying to find a trade and have had no takers. Hard to create a trade at this point in the year.

Interesting to have Pirri C the 2nd line. I do agree the options are a good thing to have and I would also still consider sending Saad down, but I am starting to think he's ready.

That was almost a full Pit line up last night as well, the competition in these games is getting very close to being at that level.

So why not let Saad play the 9 games then send him down?

I hope that all of the stretching Toews was doing during the stoppages is not an indication of something worse. He had looked like a beast most of the preseason, almost like he is ready to rip off 20 goals in 30 games or something like that.

Saad has more than earned the 9 game look. Be interesting to see how he is against full lineups. Just going to be a big dilemma about keeping him up because of the ELC. But then Olesz's contract might be the tipping point to keeping him at the NHL level and sending Saad down. Mostly because of roster space, but also because...

Pirri should be up. He has more than shown it in the pre-season. Now if I can just stop thinking it is Burish out there when he plays.

As far as the game last night, it was interesting. The 'Hawks really had their chances, and could have scored 5+. The Pens are a good team, there is no doubt about it, but Emery just made them look better with giving up 3 goals on the Pens first 10 shots. And it is not like they were getting quality opportunities.

I am not surprised that Sulivan scored. Just seems like he does that every game against the 'Hawks.

If Pirri could just be decent on that second line, that is something to seriously consider. Not against it. You'll find out more having him play 2nd line than having him play 4th line minutes with guys like Carcillo, Scott, Mayers, etc. It also moves Sharp back where he's more effective on the wing and you can now bounce him and Brunette and Frolik around the top 2 lines freely without consequence at the center position. More I think about it, the more I like it. Can't hurt.
