I'm helping my buddy finish packing today for his trek to LA, finally making the plunge after 6 years of working out of chicago.

Loius is very very smart. It's amazing almost that he's such a great comedian because at the end of the day all he really does is tell stories of common sense and say everything that everyone is already thinking.

It's no surprise he took his cues from Carlin. I was watching something where was talking about how early on in his career he was struggling and going in a circle and he was listening to an interview where Carlin was talking about how he does his stand up. And he said that he works on stuff for that year's special or album or tour or whatever and the next year he throws most if not all of it away and starts fresh. And if you watch a special Carlin did in say the 70s and compare it to what he did in the 80s, 90s and 00s, you can totally see the evolution. Almost completely different. After hearing that, and being stunned by it at first, Louis said he molded his own act after Carlin's premise and that's when he started being sucessful.

Edit: here it is

I'm impressed by any comedian that can continually create "good" new material. Very few of his contemporaries can say the same (for a while it seemed like Gaffigan was working the same materials for like 3 years straight).

I respect what the old guard had to go through, especially when it came to censorship and getting arrested, but there's a great number of newer voices that are very funny. Reggie Watts, Maria Bamford, Brian Posehn, etc.

While I loved Carlin, CK has taken his comedy to an amazing level.

Thing about Carlin though which is a big reason why I see him apart from almost every other comedian was that he eventually got to a point where you could take all the jokes and funny comments away and he would still be incredible to just listen to talk. He no longer was dependent on being funny to grasp an audience's attention and make them think about any number of topics. He had bridged that gap, and I haven't really seen anyone that has duplicated that quite yet. Time will tell.

There are plenty of comedians like that. I honestly wish George did more. I think if Bill Hicks would have lived, he may have been the most vocal outside of a comedy club/stage.

Louis C.K. is a genius writer and comedian. I don't know if any other comics really compare to him in terms of solid writing, as well as performance. It's tight. If you haven't seen the HBO Talking Funny special with him, Seinfeld, Gervais and Chris Rock, then watch it. It's awesome.

Someone else who died too soon, Mitch Hedberg. This guy is weird, but awesome. He has his own thing.

Patton is hilarious.

Even just looking at the guy cracks me up. He was pretty funny on some sit-com my wife used to watch too. Can't wait to see the clip (can't at work now).

Carlin was a master of acting through his routines also. His gesturing and facial reactions were unbelievably funny.

Ck is also one of the best interviews out there which makes that more appealing. Some of the funniest shit that has come out if his mouth has been on talk shows and radio. That's one thing with a lot of comedian when interviewed they just spew out their onstage routines and jokes. Ck seems to be fresh and on the ball constantly.

Schimmel was great. He was bound for even bigger success. One of those comedian who also was interesting to listen to off stage and exposed a lot of the underbelly of the stand up circut. How lonely it can be and how depressing it is. Drugs and alcohol and all that interesting stuff.
