The Cubs officially designated Michael Bowden for assignment on Tuesday in order to make room on the 25-man roster for Matt Garza. The Cubs claimed Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the Cardinals and sent him to Triple-A Iowa.

Dale Sveum was asked why the Cubs designated Bowden and kept Shawn Camp following Tuesday’s game. Sveum said, “Camp can get righties out with his sweeping slider. He’s durable. He can pitch. That’s why.”

7.45 ERA and gave up a Granny to blow the game against Pittsburgh. Yeah! He can pitch alright.

17 of the Cubs first 44 games have been decided by one-run. The Cubs are 6-11 in one run games this season … and have blown 10 saves as a team. Shawn Camp was charged with his third blown save on Tuesday night after his latest implosion.

Shawn Camp was not happy following Tuesday game and according to the Sun-Times, snapped at a reporter that asked about the problems he is having with his changeup after Camp dismissed his velocity issues.

Dale Sveum was asked about the bullpen issues following the latest meltdown. Sveum told ESPN Chicago, “Seven weeks into the season to have 10 blown saves and losing games that you have in the bag.”

Sveum is going to probably end up taking the heat after it is all said and done unless Jed once again points the blame at himself, but I guess payroll is maxed out, so nothing can be done until the off-season.

Eduardo Sanchez will get a shot sooner than he thinks.

Dime a dozen......Eh Rich?

I guess Matt Lindstrom's 2.1 million wasnt feasible in the budget Ricketts gave theo......too expensive and over 30.

If Gregg wasn't closing games the way he is, this bullpen would be atrocious aside from Russell. That may also come to a screeching halt or if he continues, he may become trade bait which furthers the need to find more bullpen arms.

Just curious if one of the two drafted (Appel/Gray) would get a shot in the pen to see how they perform at the major league level later this year?

I believe thats what the White Sox did with Chris Sale in 2010, then had him close 2011, then start 2012. I wouldnt make Appel/Gray a closer for abother year, I'd have them starting. But then again, the cubs dont have Dylan Axelrod or Addison Reed coming up right behind. Either way, smart move on the south side. Sale is the only bright spot on that team right now.

Garza becomes a piece now. I try and pry Cody Buckel package from Texas for a Garza. Buckel has struggled this year so far, but I'd still take him. Baltimore will be in on Garza too, mlbtraderumors reports, but they dont want to give up any decent pitching prospects.

Of course stopping the "what if" game and just extending Garza would be an option I'd welcome.

James Russell is the best pitcher in the Cubs bullpen, he walks one batter and Sveum takes him out but lets Hector Rondon load the bases and Shawn Camp give up a grand slam. Just because Russell is a left doesn't mean he can't face more than one batter.

Sveum doesn't trust the bullpen, that's why he was letting his starter go more innings, so why didn't he put in Carlos Villanueva for at least the 6th and 7th innings?

Starting to think Sveum doesn't really know what he's doing? Either that or this team is in tank mode and it's the FO making these calls?

I guess the difference is that I never thought Sveum knew what he was doing to begin with. He was a career nobody with no Manager experience and he was hired by Theo to be cheap and thrifty. He is serving the exact purpose he was hired for....to lose the close ones.

Looking at it that way, it was a great hire for Theo! He really succeeded in getting exactly what he wanted out of a manager. A nobody loser.

Rondon came in first. Got one out. Loaded the bases. 2 hits and 1 walk.

Russell came in with the bases jacked and walked his guy.

Camp came in and gave up the HR. Then loaded them up again. 2 hits and a walk before getting the last 2 outs.

So here we have a Rule V that can not get outs and a tool box that can not get outs.

And his slider is sweeping the nation.

The Cubs have a few 40-man roster options to put in the pen (newly acquired Sanchez, Rafael Dolis, Chris Rusin & Brooks Raley); however their real potential bullpen help is not on the 40-man roster (Yoanner Negrin, Guillermo Moscoso [likely being saved for rotation when a trade goes down], Blake Parker & Zach Putnam). The Cubs also have some potentially solid bullpen arms in AA (Rosscup & Batista). Of coarse, the Cubs do have 1 open 40 man roster spot at the moment, and could have used that on Bowden. Makes you wonder if they have a trade being worked on that would require that additional 40 man spot.

Yawn.

So I take it you are saying they suck and wait 2-3 years for more lottery picks to pump in....

Add more fuel to the fire. Camp has been DLed and Rafael Dolis has been called up. Sure this is mentioned in other threads as well, but this is the first one I am checking today.

I am starting to wonder if Sveum is gonna be back in a year or two. He is an eh manager who I think is just a stop gap till the team is ready to bring in a real manager. This bullpen though... jesus.

It's pretty sad how bad our pen is. Big changes are coming this offseason in that department

Read the IR on Camp. Big toe sprain. Sounded BS so turns out he has had this pre-Blowden and they were hoping it would heal so instead of 15 day DL Camp they axe Blowden then 15 day DL Camp. Ass clowns running the ship.

Maybe it's just a fake injury so they aren't allowed to use him for a few weeks haha

Sadly I think their holding onto him in hopes that some team would desperately trade a warm minor league body for him

Stop Gap manager?.....Really?.....You've bought everything they're selling. No wasted seasons? Seasons are precious? I'm all for building a dynasty. But please tell me how they didn't outright lie from the initial press conference.
