It was a fantastic arc- the main character was a little more self serving and selfish in the movie than the book... I never really liked him as a person and he was portrayed as "me first" all the way.
I was watching it and fairly unhappy with his character until the end, and you realize the director played it out for a specific purpose.

up until the last few minutes... I hated the movie for making him shallow. Then it became a brilliant choice.

On a similar note, by the end of the Dark Tower books I really didn't like Roland anymore.

Talking to a buddy of mine last night and this point hit me. That was a pretty damn important part of the book- susannah was not racist, but Detta was.

Perhaps that will be trimmed as a movie shortening measure?

Her "struggle" could be trimmed to the physical handicap alone... the split personality was a fantastic story, but it could take an entire movie alone just to tell that story alone.

They can still pull it off I think. If you think about Roland is basically royalty, right? To Detta 'Black Roland' could theoretically have come off as an Uncle Tom.

Or they could just drop that whole part, I mean she could hate Roland for the simple fact he's drug her into this crazy adventure or whatever. Susannah is probably going to be the most difficult character to pull off, she's an amputee'd black woman with 3 distinct personalities that was developed over how many hundreds and hundreds of pages?

On a similar note, by the end of the Dark Tower books I really didn't like Roland anymore.

It's pretty understandable. Roland was absolutely not a nice guy, he wasn't even a good guy. He was exactly what he thought he needed to be to carry out his quest, King drives this home in the first book and you can see Roland struggle with basic humanity through out.

He came back around towards the end... but that is a lot of why his quest did not end.

My assumption is that he was a little more humane this time around.... but not noble enough to finish the quest.

I like to think that Jake, Susan, and Eddie make it to the top of the tower this next time around.

Definitely how I felt at the end. He cares about the tet but not enough to make sure they get there with him, that's the key. As awesome as Roland is as a character, and like Shifty said, he isn't likeable, even to the point where you have to wonder if he'll ever get it.

I have to admit that the end really messed with me for a couple weeks, to the point where my wife told me to just get over it already. I didn't get to 4,5,6, and 7 immediately due to money being tight at the time but when I did I shotgunned them in quick succession. So when it was over I didn't know what to do with myself. Roland was so determined that even though the book ended, we know it really didn't.

There is that theory going around on the internet that the first shot of the movie will be of the Horn of Eld hanging from Roland's belt, meaning that for some the movie is a sequel. I'm really conflicted on that.

I've came to the conclusion that good or bad this movie will take nothing away from the book or what it meant to me at the time. If the movie is great then awesome, if it's not it won't matter to me at all.

That is a fantastic outlook. that sums up how I will view it.

I do have hope for it, and I do think that no matter how it is done, King will have much control and it will follow his vision.

I read an article a while back where king said he sells the rights to his stories for one dollar- He calls them his dollar babies. If I remember right, he does so under the stipulation that he has a heavy hand in what goes on film, and who puts it on there. Maybe I am mistaken... I am too lazy to research right now... but I believe he has massive creative control.
If that is in fact correct, then whatever the movie becomes, It is his vision and I will probably enjoy it.

Oh yeah, I know, it's awesome. I think maybe there was a time in his earlier career where he would option his work for super cheap. Very cool he does that for young up-and-comers.

Regardless I can't imagine this movie will get made without him having a heavy influence, it worries me that they'll go the CGI route to make a younger King for the scenes his character will be needed for. Man this adaptation raises so many questions lol.

Actually, most of the time he has very little control over the film adaptions. His basic theory is that if it's good, he can take partial credit. If it's bad, hey he's just the guy that wrote the book.

I do not have a good feeling about this one. It's been stuck in development hell for so long. I have a feeling that they are going to strip the story way down to appeal to the masses and they'll only continue the story if it does well.

It really, really needs to be a series. It's 8 books, most are 400+ pages. There's so much that happens.

What I had hoped would happen.
