My favorite teams
Injuries definitely factor into Noah's performance. Not sure what is up with that knee, but he hasn't really been right all year save a handful of games. Taj I think has been fairly consistent defensively. Maybe not quite as lockdown as a couple years ago due to multiple ankle issues, but he's still been good. Likewise, Jimmy has generally been pretty good. However, I do agree that having to carry more offensive load has taken away from Jimmy's defense. It's very hard to be the team's #1 offensive and defensive option for 40 minutes a night. This is why we've seen Jimmy be very passive offensively on tougher defensive matchups and less intense defensively on easier matchups I think.its not really far fetched if you think about injuries to Noah/Taj and Jimmy being more focused on offense
ive also been a firm believer that Gasol is about 50% of the problem on defense..if not more
Gasol is a weird situation. He's better than Boozer...I don't think you can argue differently. He's a good help defender and he blocks a lot of shots...things Boozer couldn't dream of doing. Gasol's P&R defense is pretty bad, but we knew that coming in. He's not really worse than Boozer in that regard, he just fails differently. Boozer generally played off of the ball handler and gave them the jumper. Gasol will play up a little more and get beat on drives. I think the real difference may be that Noah played much closer to the basket when Boozer was here which allowed him to grab more rebounds and be the help defender. Now he's out more on the perimeter guarding stretch 4s which negates his strengths.
Generally we also have the issue of giving up way more offensive rebounds. Generally, our opponent's FG% has been on par with previous years. We're ranked 4th in the league in that category this year. The problem is, we're not getting those rebounds which gives opponents second and third chances so they end up scoring anyway. Funny enough, Golden State is very comparable to us in terms of rebounds and rebound percentage. The difference there is that Golden State destroys opponents offensively.
Personally, I think the personnel hasn't changed much in defensive effort, it's just that we're not getting those 50/50 balls. Call that lack of effort if you like, but I don't think all of sudden the team stopped caring about defense.
