Construct lineups/rosters for the 2012 Cubs. You can take the spend to rebuild route, or the youth movement rebuilding route.

I'm gonna go the cheap way right now, as it is beginning to look wiser and more likely to me.

I'll do 1 where we do sign one significant player (Fielder), and one with no significant external additions.

Fielder route:
C Geovany Soto
1B Prince Fielder
2B Darwin Barney
SS Starlin Castro
3B Josh Vitters
LF Alfonso Soriano
CF Brett Jackson
RF Marlon Byrd
SP Matt Garza
SP Andrew Cashner
SP Trey McNutt
SP Randy Wells
SP Jay Jackson
CL Carlos Marmol

Full Youth Route:
C Welington Castillo
1B Ryan Flaherty
2B Darwin Barney
SS Starlin Castro
3B Josh Vitters
LF Alfonso Soriano
CF Brett Jackson
RF Tyler Colvin
SP Matt Garza
SP Andrew Cashner
SP Trey McNutt
SP Randy Wells
SP Jay Jackson
CL Chris Carpenter

y would they spend the dough on fielder with all that junk around him?

We have no good 1B prospect and might not have money for more than 1 FA. Let the youth grow around him and compete in a few years.

Either way, it'll take at least two years to be in contention. Possibly more if Ricketts still decides he doesn't want to win.

Well ya, we're going to start rebuilding, so if it was sooner it would be really lucky.

What i think team will look like:

C Soto
1B FA that is cheap!
2B Barney
3B Vitters
SS Castro
LF Sori
CF Bjax
RF Colvin

SP1 Z (i dont see him waiving NTC)
SP2 Demp (dont see him waiving NTC plus struggling mightly for team to even think about him)
SP3: Garza
SP4: Cashner
SP5: McNutt

CL: Marmol
SU: Marshall
SU: Wood (will retire a Cub)

I see Cubs trading Byrd cause only have 1 year left. See Wells being dealt cause he be in ARB years.... 1 idea i have for 1B would be putting Soto at 1B and letting Castillo play...thats if they go really cheap....

Do you think Ricketts even wants that? From everything I've heard, it seems like he thinks they're World Series contenders right now. :D

Fielders played at least 157 games a season since being called up. Great player who will only be 28 next season.

I'd like to see the Cubs sign him to a 5 year contract, but if the Ricketts are still broke, well it's going to be a long tenure for them.

Fielder is NOT taking a 5 year contract. He will be a 7-9 year deal since he only 28. Again only way Fielder signs with Cubs is if Cubs show they want to win. With Ricketts money situation it isnt going to happen. I just wish Ricketts would actually come out and say WE ARE REBUILDING. He is to scared though that fans will not show up. Fox showed a clip today that attendance has gone down the last 3 years. 39K 2009, 37 K 2010, and down to 34 K this year. So i give Cub fans cudos for not showing up to support this owner :)

If Brett Jackson, an unproven prospect, is captain of the Cubs outfield next season, things won't be any better.

This is more realistic then the intial post but i still dont see Vitters starting in the majors next year. This might sound ridiculous also but I prefer Campy to Colvin his speed is something we really really need. Colvin is no joke a Matt Murton second coming.

He'll likely be our CF before this season ends. He may have been already had he not gotten injured.

So what if he's unproven? Wasn't everyone unproven at some point? We have to give him his shot at some point.

We aren't getting Fielder or Pujols.

I'm pretty sure we just went through this whole thing last year with James, Bosh, and Wade.

We have no good 1B prospect .
Bour and Ridling do not approve of this. Plus Vitters has been seeing more time at first this season.

I think Bour and Ridling are a little too far off though.

Higher on Bour than Ridling, but Bour is still in A+, not even AA yet.

Bour has only been in the system for two seasons and he's mashed anywhere he's been. Bour played a lot more college ball. Depending on the way things are at the MLB level next season and if Bour keeps hitting he could be with the Cubs next year.

That's a pretty realistic line-up that I would be happy with.

With one big exception and that being I have ZERO interest in getting rid of Zambrano. If we're not gonna have an ace, I'd at least like to keep a couple of # 2's in both Garza and Zamrano.

Going the completely young and cheap route also doesn't interest me. I imagine we'd be the only team averaging 35,000 fans a night saying "I don't want to win this year".

Vitters and McNutt won't be ready next season...Jay Jackson isn't really all that good.

I was doing an opening day lineup.

I could see Vitters getting the call. If not him, then LeMahieu or someone could be a stopgap. Maybe a cheap FA then... or even another year of A-Ram.

McNutt is pretty much ready now. Per scouts and Geovany Soto.
