McDermott isn't going to be a very accurate shooter with the Bulls, unless the Bulls bring in a coach that can develop shooting(better than current coaches), such as a specialist in shooting mechanics and coaching. /broken record

Honest question, if he was such a good shooter in college, why would that accuracy magically cease because the Bulls don't have a specialist coach? Aren't his mechanics such that they are ingrained to be accurate?

A lot of adjustments are made at the pro level. But the Bulls problem, is that they play full on defense in practice to master Thibs craft, which has shaken up players and thrown guys off rhythm. Korver's % dropped as a Bull, so did Belinelli, MDJ, Troy Murphy, Tony Snell, and every other player in the same position. The only argument for guys that didn't see much of a change were shooters that are primary ball handlers.

If the Bulls bring in a legit shooting coach, then you can take the existing players and improve their shot %. Not only does it benefit inexperienced rookies, but it benefits veterans. Every team that has brought in a shooting specialist, has taken their teams from being in the bottom 10 to the top 10. That is how much of an impact a shooting coach has made. And at some point, every team will eat up every worthwhile shooting coach, so IMO, it's better to get someone sooner than later. Only a handful of teams have one now.

So playing defense messes up their shot? Or is it that going up against defensive pressure messes them up? Not saying that getting a shooting coach wouldn't be extremely helpful regardless, but it seems weird that defense would mess them up like that.

BTW anyone who disagrees that Doug McDermott won't be MVP, scoring championship, Roy, All-Star MVP, Finals MVP, All-NBA First team and dunk on LeBron six dozen times will be permabanned and I'll personally mail a box full of roadkill, pubic hair, soiled diapers and candy corn to your house.

I might have disagreed if you didn't have the soiled diapers on the mix.....phew!

McBuckets lacks the athleticism and versatility to create his own shots. He's just a cheaper version of Dunleavy, which isn't saying much.

McBuckets does not lack athleticism. People who lack athleticism do not jump 37 inches.

Not per se, but something the Bulls do, or don't do, does. When I used to train BJJ MMA religiously, you learn a move, get proficient at a move, then learn the counter, get proficient. You can't just learn one one side and expect to be effective. The Bulls work so much on defense, that when players get good at lowering opponent effectiveness, they don't counterbalance and learn how to overcome the same tactics they are using to mess up other teams(Thibs stubbornness? who knows. I'm not in that war-room to know what happens). Which means a lot more forced shots, also, it means guys have a harder time getting into and maintaining a rhythm, which is one part of what a shooting specialty coach can break down and develop players. Along with other things, like improving mechanics all around.

I kinda see what you're getting at. But to me, it seems like if you're going up against a top notch defense all the time, you'd know how to get your shots off against the best defenses. The Bulls are the best team defense in the league and if you can score against that in practice, there's not really any reason you couldn't do it against lesser opponents. Perhaps I don't really have an understanding of the move/countermove relationship in this aspect so I'm way off.

Again, I totally agree that a shooting coach would do wonders for this team, but since we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, it's really hard to pinpoint the exact reasons for offensive woes other than lack of talent on that end.

Yeah, I'm sure his vertical will make him an all-star and help the Bulls score 100+ pts per game.

He is a Dunleavy clone, who is a Korver clone. Wasted trade, wasted draft pick.

I love it. People who probably never saw the guy play are calling him a bust. The leading scorer in the NCAA is a bust. A guy who was marked his entire career yet posted great numbers and efficiency is a bust.

Maybe the guy will turn into a bust. Hell, so could Embiid or any other pick made on draft day. But I somehow trust Thibs when he appears so excited to get the guy, his attitude and basketball IQ. SOmehow I put a bit more stock in that opinion than I do folks who proclaim him a loser and a wasted pick. But that is just me:)

I guess there isn't anything wrong about adding a shooting coach and certainly there have been many great shooters that the Bulls have had in their history who maybe could qualify. Personally I wonder if having someone who knew shooting mechanics could have really helped Hinrich early on in his career. He never really learned in his entire career.

I'm not saying he's a bust. I think trading two first round picks for him was a waste.

At best, McDermott is a spot up shooter in the NBA. If the Bulls get Melo at SF, what are they going to do with McBuckets?

They're better off using the 16th and 19th picks to get an athletic SG or PF (Payne) and a backup PG (Shabazz). It's all about finding players who give us depth and versatility to complement Melo and Rose.

Right, cause we are in desperate need of a 6'9 PF that is athletic and doesn't score and another undersized PG that plays like an even more undersized SG and comes from the same type of shitty conference that McDermott comes from. I mean really, how much better is the American Conference than the Big East. Get out of here with your hater speak or you must be an expert on McDermott. If so I apologize.

I can tell you don't watch college basketball at all. Payne is like Taj, only he can shoot from anywhere on the court.

Who plays PF behind Taj?

If the Bulls don't re-sign DJ, who is our back-up at PG?

If Butler shoots poorly or gets traded, who is our starting SG? Snell? Can we count on him?

In my mind, if Melo comes here, the Bulls are still weak at SG, PG and PF. Nobody knows if Rose will be ready to play a full season. We still need depth behind the starting five.

Every team in the NBA is weak once you get beyond the 7th player. Rose, Melo, Noah, Taj, Butler, Mirotic, McDermott, Bairstow, Snell would be a top 5 rotation. The NBA is becoming less about what traditional position they play and more about skill set.
