I agree, but I also think that McCown's conservative approach to the game because of his backup talent level is not going to open up the offense. This offense is in its infancy. If the Bears were to go with McCown, he's not going to be a guy that will see this offense through to maximum potential. Can Jay be that guy? Some say yes, some say it's time to find a cheap guy that we can have the same question marks about, a guy with potential.

The problem I have with all of this start McCown, draft a QB in the first round to develop talk is that we will need those high round picks for Defense if we want to contend. McCown or a rookie QB are not going to put up the points to win games with a bad D...

The meatball days of the defense leading the way are really done. Yes, the d needs a lot of help. But with the right moves, even with a QB drafted in round 1, you can still get the defense to a point where it would be in the middle of the pack in 1 year when you also factor in free agency. Its over-reacting to me to act like drafting a QB in round 1 means the defense is going to be forgotten. At the end of the day, a QB is more important than a DT or LB or CB, and you can find players good enough, which is all you really need, in free agency and rounds 2-7.

On the other hand, the lack of JC's likely 14-17M/yr cap number would allow for known quantity FA upgrades on D

I think it's when we get over the top posts about Josh being better than Cutler, even in this O, that the reaction come in kind. He isn't. You could ask any pro personal scout or guys like Greg Gabriel or Hub and they aren't exactly part of his fan club. Whether he's the long term future is a separate issue but I don't see us just letting him walk and showing our hand on draft day.

Cutler’s last two interceptions — the pick-six against the Redskins and the deflection in the end zone against the Lions — both came on throws that McCown never would have attempted because he knows he can’t make them. That’s one reason McCown has a 103.2 passer rating and Cutler an 88.4.

LOL. Not sure how AJ bobbling a catch for an INT gets rung up on Cutler as his bad for attempting the throw... It wasn't like AJ was draped in triple coverage on the play. Are we really going to start criticizing him for trusting AJ to make a catch vs single coverage now? Give me a fucking break. Nor am I seeing the logic in saying McCown wouldn't attempt a designed 4 yard slant because he doesn't have the arm to make it.. Get the **** outta here with this shit and quit bogarting the joint Mark Potash.

Was Gannon not a journeyman quarterback that finally turned decent and had two consecutive pro-bowl appearances before Trestman became a coach with the Raiders? Not to say Trestman and his offense can't be a reason for McCown's success but why is Trestman getting so much credit for turning Gannon's career around when Gannon clearly already turned it around?

2001-2003 - Marc Trestman OAK (QB/OC)

Rich Gannon

1987-1998 - Mediocre
Goes to the Raiders
1999 - Pro Bowl
2000 - Pro Bowl
Trestman
2001 - Pro Bowl
2002 - Pro Bowl
2003 - Injury/Rating falls dramatically
2004 - The End
Gannon won an MVP with Trestman on staff but Callahan was calling the plays most of the time and Gannon was already an All Pro the season before Trestman arrived.

Three guys in the area (One all over Jeffery) another over the top. Two were very close. Another underneath running to the throw.

Its going to fast for me, but it looks like PI all day on that guy who has his back turned but is all over Jeffery.

I get that. That's why I don't understand why Trestman's name is joined to Gannon becoming a good quarterback. Gannon was mediocre for a decade and something clicked with the Raiders and he was a probowler twice before Trestman. Did Trestman take this new journeyman turned elite QB and push him from elite to MVP? lol. I don't think so. Did Trestman ruin his career? He was there when Gannon fell back to nothing. I don't think that either. But the Trestman/Gannon connection needs to go away, no matter how much Gannon loves the guy.

Ah yes because naturally all the high profile FA's that everyone will be coveting will be allowed to walk with no attempts made by their teams to resign them, and they'll all want to come play for Chicago on 1 year deals like this last crop of stop gap FA's...:bizarro:

Sorry but I'd rather see the defense rebuilt with high draft picks then overpaying in FA for stop gap measures. If the goal is to be competing for a championship every year then IMO every available resource should be going towards the defense this offseason with the exception of a new Center and developmental QB. I just don't really see the logic in reaching for the 6th or 7th best QB in the 1st round when you could have the 1st or 2nd best player at some defensive position that is in much greater need of an upgrade than QB. You can still get Trestman a QB to develop in the 3rd or 4th round.

I am a Jay Cutler fan(boy). But if we are being objective, why is Jeffery getting more criticism for dropping a td than Cutler is for his endzone pick at the end of the first half?

Because Jeffrey dropping that TD pass made Cutler's stats look worse and thus fan boys can't use the numbers for justification for paying Cutler $100 million.

It doesn't have to be like this though. Assuming we draft towards the end of the 1st round, similar to like we did last year, it doesn't have to be a QB if there is a run on QB's. You could still take a DE, or CB, or whatever depending on how the draft went, and then depending on how its looking in the 2nd round, either trade up to get your guy, or if he will last take him there. It all really depends on who Trestman and Emery tab in the draft process for who they like where that would determine where that QB comes from. Assuming we don't keep Cutler, his replacement does not necessarily HAVE to be drafted with the first pick.

No doubt it was a throw into a small window (ignoring the blatant PI) with the saftey over top and the LB closing in but it's still a contested throw that AJ needs to come down with. He put it up there for his taller WR to make a play and he couldn't complete the catch. Shit happens, but I still don't think it was some awful decision like some of Cutler's other INTs we've all seen. If anyone has the all-22 footage we can debate if there was a better option to go with the football but if you can't trust your WR's to make contested throws then you probably shouldn't be playing QB. I don't want a QB who's only going to throw the ball if the guy has a 5 yard cushion of air around him...

Yep, Josh just throws it away on the 2 point conversion with seconds left instead of up for grabs. That's so much better. Nice managing.:smh:

I love having Josh back there as a backup but you can point to stuff he can't or doesn't do as well. Jay has a low release point and it will always be part of his mix but he did nothing wrong on the red zone pick. Tips happen more when you throw from there but he had a lane. It got swatted. Shit happens.

It might not even come to it but if it did, I'm ok with not contending next year if it means we're a better team in the long term.

I'm much more interested in building towards being a perennial contender than taking every year as an individual goal to win it all every year.

Exactly. Mike Glennon as a rookie on an awful team has looked pretty tolerable as a rookie. I don't think there is anything dictating the Bears spend a top pick on a QB when with Trestman it's shown you can likely take a talented but unpolished guy in 2nd 3rd or 4th round and Trestman can more than work with that as has been shown.

But as I said months ago I'd be shocked if Cutler isn't back in 2014.

not even gonna lie brehs...since the redskins game i've thought we had a "SYSTEM" on our hands like the packers, saints, and patriots..i think cutlers days as a chicago bear are numbered and we draft a player to replace him
I think thats just it. Trestmans system is what beats a defense, not Jay yeehawing the ball all over the field.

The next month will be interesting to see if McCown keeps playing clean games. If so, Jay is gone imo.
