Warren Sapp doesn't believe in it.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2117216-warren-sapp-didnt-tip-waitress-because-boys-dont-tip

Every receipt I sign nowadays wants to know what I plan on tipping. I don't believe that picking up food to go or a coffee at a counter should warrant a tip.

What are your thoughts on tipping?

When is tipping really necessary or to be considered?

I try to tip where someone has to use their people skills in whatever service work they are doing for me...

Waiter/Waitress, tip.... pickup counter person no tip and idk who it would even go to.
Person cutting my hair.... if they do it right and are personable, good tip.
Fast food or coffee.... usually don't tip
Car wash dudes who dry my truck and clean the windows and all that... I tip... no personal skills required but they aint making much money and the place I go to they always do a good job.
Cab drivers I will tip if they are nice and drive without making me think we're gonna die.

That's all I can think of where I tip.... I am never sure with stuff like hotel people... bell hops, cleaning people, etc.

I do agree I don't like it when non-tipping situations suddenly have tipping on the receipt you have to sign... kinda like all the new donation requests every time you buy something at a major store... "WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE 1$ TO HELP OUR VETERANS".... well I can't exactly so no to that question without looking like a total d-bag, so yes.... charge me another 1$.

My favorite one of those was being asked if I want to donate to the American Lung Society while buying a pack of cigarettes. I just looked at the girl and said "Really?!?"

You should also tip Baristas if you are ordering espresso drinks...it takes more skill than you would think. If you are just ordering the coffee out of the carafe...not really necessary. I tip cabbies better these days because the price of gas is absurd. Bartenders always get the best tips out of me, but your tips are well rewarded.

I'm in the restaurant biz, and have been my whole damn life. Here's my two cents:

Tip your servers at least 15%. Nearly every restaurant now makes their servers tip based on their sales. So, if a server is to tip out 6% of their sales and you bill is $100, that means they "lose" $6 instantly. So, you're $10 tip or 10% means only $4 goes into their pocket. Nearly every restaurant does this nowadays.

That said, I have seen the decline in service. From the host stand to your servers. America goes out to eat more and more every year and b/c of this, our restaurants and employees have picked up bad habits b/c the money comes so easily at times. This is why I promote from within 95% of the time (not an exaggeration). I pretty much always tip between 15-20%.

I tip for the reasons DeepChicago mentioned above, but I don't like the system. A server shouldn't be required to have a direct incentive to provide efficient and friendly service; that should be the bare minimum as being the whole point of the job. I think they should be paid a fair hourly rate by the employers.

But it is the way it is, and as much as I don't appreciate having to pay the wages of the employees of the people whose business I'm already patronizing, I'm not going to let the servers go without just to make a point, so I tip and I tip generously.

I usually don't tip in places other than restaurants, bars and cabs. I got a sandwich at Quizznos last weekend for the first time in a while and couldn't believe they had a freaking tip jar. You gotta be kidding me. I'm already paying $8 for a $2 sandwich, you want me to pay the salary of the guy who cashes me out at the register too? GTFO.

I always just get basic coffee at Dunkin.... so no Baristas necessary for my mornings, so np there.

Bartenders though, I completely forgot about them.... I tip my bartenders well just like I do with restaurant servers... if you do a good job and are personable I will tip you well. Lol the bartender at my sister's wedding last year kept making me different drinks/shots/bombs and they were all good so I tipped the **** outta her jar.... dat sounded dirty lol

I'm standard 18%, with a few exceptions. I used to work in a restaurant as well so I know the myriad reasons why my food can be coming out late - and often, it is never the fault of my waiter/waitress, so they shouldn't be faulted. The only time I go under 18% is a place like a hibachi restaurant as I'm not too sure how they break that down between the waitress and the chef who is preparing in front of me.

There are also a few places I go to based on who my waitress/bartender is - so I always go over the top for them.
