Kane carried Toews the last cup run

Somewhat. Toews does get the luxury of often getting the job to shut down the other teams top center and vice versa with other centers against him. Epic fights between toews and guys like kessler, bergeron, datysuk etc in the past. You know as well as i do that toews in the playoffs his job is less about scoring the big goals and more so the shut down role esp on the pk. I think both kane and toews have the luxury of playing off each others strengths. Thats what will be interesting about the first round this year. Can Toews be more effective on offense and will he be able to pick up the slack for a missing kane? Q will still prioritize Toews as defense first but hes going to have more to carry on his shoulders also. Should be an interesting look.

So how would Toews PK play rate? How many of the other top centers play PK, I'm not remembering a lot of them seeing PK duty. I see Toews as in the top 5 overall.

Obviously you've never watched Tavares play

Or how bad Toews was the first 3 rounds of the playoffs that year

Is high end defense irrelevant to you? because the factor of what makes something bad or not isn't just offensive production.

I would argue that even though tavaras isnt a defensive god that part of his game is slighty under estimated. Hes not that bad on the defensive end. Not amazing but decent enough where isnt a liability. Better than kane on the defensive end and not that far behind with offensive skills. Tavaras is really good as we all know. Stuck on a bad team for many years that is getting better. I say watch out for Tavaras the next few years hes going to explode.

I see Toews as more of the later years Stevie Y type of player, when Bowman took over. He's not as skilled as say Crosby or Stamkos, but he isn't far off either. I think he plays defensively better than those two and would say he's top 5 maybe even top 3 in the NHL for centers. He's a proven winner, willing to do the little things and go to the rough areas, and most of all gives it his best effort every night.

If I were to go top 5 centers in the league it would go Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Toews, Getzlaf. Crosby, Malin and Stamkos are just in that next tier of higher skilled players.

To be fair, Tavares would fit anywhere in the next 2 spots after Stamkos, just my personal opinion.

Tyler Seguin belongs in the same category as those other top centers. If not now then very soon. I actually put him above Malkin for some strange reason. I can't really figure out why I don't rank Malkin as high as most do. Not trying to go against the grain with him there is just something about him that drops him on my ranking scales.

Blow me. Teemu Selanne isn't even in the top 100 RWers of the last 20 years. Maybe 101.

Here is another question (and Im a hockey newb), could Toews be like all the others named in this thread? Or does Toews a guy that 'wins you Cups' not a guy that dazzles you?

Toews is a very very very desirable type of player that enhances a teams chances of winning a cup as he has with the Hawks. I think that is the easiest way to explain that. Like all other superstars they still need the right ingredients around them for a team to be successful. Toews is a guy a franchise can build around much like the others that have come up in this conversation. No different than any other team based sport.

I wouldn't say he can't dazzle you as he's got the skill, but his game is more simplified and well rounded.

If we're comparing players, Kane is more of the dazzler who can take the game over with his skill in a single shift, while Toews is more dominant in playing a well rounded game and can take the game over by doing the little things every shift and building upon them.

Who have the islanders had that other teams have to "worry about" - other than Tavares?

kelly hrudey

thats a great point though. Now with Strome there and developing well he will free up some of the pressure that Tavaras has been carrying. Islanders are going places. Even Kyle Okposo is a good talent. Matt Martins a gamer. They have 3-4 really good prospects under them also. Things are looking up up up up up up up up up up!!!

I love the islanders

He certainly can dazzle you. This goal was from his rookie year:

I think if you put Toews on a line with Kane for an entire season, they'd destroy the NHL and each be in the top 5 for points. That does have more to do with Kane's offensive ability, but if you put Toews with an offensive talent like that, Toews isn't going to slow him down. But that's not the way he's been used to keep the Hawks from being too top-heavy.

Like others have said, he just does everything well. Really well. That was the book on him from day one, that you could throw him onto the ice in any situation and he'd excel.

And if you put any stock in intangibles, he's got 'em all. I think TCD was right in that he does have a tendency to go overboard at times, but I think that's something he's controlled more as time's gone on. I could be wrong, but I don't recall time where he's really lost it on the ice since the Detroit series in the 2013 playoffs.

Toews, though, is a lock for the best defensive forward award. He really is having an awesome season.
