What do you mean and to what end?

I'm not going to yell at you, but I can calmly tell you that it makes little to no sense.

What gives you the impression that Crosby is any less injured than Savard?

Secondly, how does "milking it" benefit Crosby? An excuse for having an off year last year? Oh wait, he was ON FIRE and playing the best hockey of his life when he got hurt. I don't understand a single reason why Sid would be choosing to miss playing games in his prime.

Hrm...for some odd reason, I cannot see the original post about Crosby milking his concussion.

I wont yell, either...but I will say I'm absolutely stunned at such a thought. Stupefied.

People can yell at me for this, but I think he is milking it. And by doing that he's making guys like Marc Savard who are actually severely hurt, look less important.

Post #34 Right above the sig.

Look, having a concussion isn't like a hangnail, it is actually pretty serious shit -in that, Liam Neeson's wife (Natasha Richardson I think) - up in Canada a couple of years back had a skiiing accident (hit a tree), she was pretty lucid, as I understand the stories at the time, but her brain eventually swelled up and she died.

Actual doctors, don't play with head injuries -sure, coaching staffs can try to obfuscate things -but, considering no one sits the best player in the NHL who is having a career year, that it is actually coldly real.

Sure there are jokes like the old Snickers ad where the QB gets nailed, is asked how many fingers are being held up -gets it right, then gets asked who he is -and the QB thinks he's Batman.

Plus, the other thing is what Dave Duerson had is actually sort of on the frontier of medical science as I read things. There seems to be very few exact things.

Concussions have ended many careers.

Im stunned by that statement. What possible reason would he....Ok, ok lm just wondering if you've ever played the game. Im not trying to be sarcastic...because anyone who actually played would know how wonderfully addictive it is. I played for over 20 years and havent been on the ice for another 20 but would sell my soul for one more season. I can assure you that he isnt "milking" anything.

And the thing is, very little is being done to prevent it. Ok, they're trying to add rules for on ice player safety but where the NHL should be doing their business is with CCM, Bauer or who ever is making the helmets. The NHL was so damn tardy in making helmets manditory in the first place and even when they did, the equipment was and STILL is lacking. Ever hold or try on a fairly recent NFL helmet? My God, you'd think you could run through a brick wall with one of them on...its amazing that there are so many head injuries in the NFL. Hockey helmets are a joke in comparison and while NFL players are for the most part, bigger and stronger....hockey players are moving faster, coming down on a harder surface while playing on said surface surrounded by wood and plexiglass. Don't handicap the players by making them wonder when and where its safe to throw a check....improve the equipment they're wearing and make that equipment globally manditory.

The only correlation between "milk" and "Crosby" is:

What's funny is that I've heard Barry Melrose say on multiple occasions that the NFL is following the NHL footsteps when it comes to helmet technology. Say what you want about Melrose, but the guy knows hockey and for him to believe something like that? That's not a good sign.

You can show me a hundred slo-mo videos of pucks hitting helmets and withstanding the shot, but you're right- you can't compare it to a football helmet. For the past 12 years or so, I've been using the same ancient CCM helmet that I got used (I think the manufacture date was 94) way back when. I finally upgraded this past winter and the lack of innovation in the new helmet is pretty stunning considering the increased focus on safety these days.

I don't care because I play pretty light contact (and the only concussion I've ever gotten was from a slapshot when I wasn't even wearing a helmet) but the pros clearly need something better.

I also like the idea of reducing/softening shoulder and elbow pads. They (shoulder pads especially) have really gotten out of control.

Forgetting the part about "Louis".... oddly enough same for me :D.

AFAIK, no relation to me; it gets kinda funny, as the CEO has the same first name as I do ... so it seems like their employees really like to track my other website (I imagine they are wondering if the guy is moonlighting or something).

I also can't wear my birthday as a number without looking like a giant narcissitic wanker (as it has been retired by every team in the NHL). I suppose that is as close as the 6 degrees of separation gets with me (ok, not that close :D).

Edit: I got a concussion from playing drop in (or rather am pretty sure it was as I was really scramble brained for at least a good 2 or 3 weeks) -took a knee to the base of my helmet after I ran into someone. It isn't much fun, I imagine it is even that much less when you know that you have prefeormed at such a high level, and all of a sudden - you just can't.

You need to rethink what your think about this whole helmet safety issue... because it is very contrary to what the medical studies have been informing the sports. Those NFL helmets your talk about making you think you can through a wall, are a HUGE PROBLEM for player safety and concussions... Because when they are wearing those helmets they do feel that way and the helmets have become weapons on the field which are more damaging to the player and opponents of hits compared to the past times in helmet or compared to a sport like Rugby without helmets were concussions are way less, but you have significantly higher shoulder injuries, which are not severe.

Just look up things about what helmets can do. Helmets, no matter what you do to them, largely can't prevent concussions or do much to prevent them. In more times than not, they'll make the issue worse.

I didn't mean during the season. I meant this offseason. All the publicity about him finally skating and things like that. It's over-publicized is all I'm saying. Savard will probably never play another game. Crosby will probably play this year.

No. I've never played. And I knew I would get shit about saying that, but that's just the way I feel.

Ahhh...ya see, that's quite a bit different than meaning "Crosby is milking it."

Maybe you're sick about hearing about Crosby...but he isn't called "The Next One" for nothing (ohh the irony; right, Mr. Lindros?). Point being, there's good reason why reporters are still writing these stories. He is the face of the League.

Yes, it was probably bad word choice.

I understand that he's the face of the league. I honestly believe that they have nothing else to talk about too. It's the offseason and they are searching for stories. Crosby being injured is an easy story. I'm just tired of hearing about it. We don't hear about Savard and his possible recovery. That's what I meant by the whole "milking" and Savard/Crosby thing.

Thats a very good point. One that never crossed my mind. Football players on many occasions turn themselves into "missiles" having no fear with that ultra padded warhead on top. It may have happened at one point but I dont remember ever seeing a hockey player use his helmet as a weapon. Head to boards or head to ice are the biggest concussion hazzards in the NHL.

Aye, especially when guys are launching their shoulder pads at opponents' heads. There's a shit ton fewer dislocated shoulders, though, in defense of the Kevlar pads.

Kevlar? Damn I know I havent played in a long time but now they're using Kevlar in shoulder pads? Isnt that the same shit they use for armor in the military? Wow, I am REALLY out of the loop.

I'm not well-versed in military protection, but I think it's similar (maybe lighter) version of it.

All things said, I'm still shocked that Crosby isn't confirmed for opening night.

If he really is this damaged (not questioning it), what's it going to be like when he finally does take the ice? Clearly they're being as careful as possible in hopes to make that last question irrelevant, but with so much still unknown about the science of this stuff- it's kinda like nobody knows how he's going to take hits from now on. That's a freaky thought.

And say he gets popped with a clean or even worse- a borderline hit and gets taken out again. Am I the only one that could picture Mario will be bending Shanahan's ear in hopes of getting some unfair justice dealt out?

Whatever ends up happening, it'll be interesting. I just hope he can play without issue.
