Interview in the Trib with Trubisky's QB coach at NC. Fluff piece- to be sure- but some pretty good stuff if you are willing to read.

Two things jump out to me:

1) Trubisky would, frequently, go whole practices without an incompletion. I recall Jim Flanigan- former Bears d-lineman- joining the Packers late in his career- discussing what a huge difference it was to be on the practice field with Brett Favre (as opposed to the flotsam at QB the Bears trotted out during his tenure). I remember he was quoted as saying how shocking it was to never see the ball hit the ground during practice.

2) Throwing guys open. Great quote from the college QB coach about Trubisky's accuracy is due, in part, to his ability to throw to the spot where the receiver is going to be- as opposed to waiting for him to come open and then gunning it (cough... Cutler).

Again- all fluff- and will be meaningless if he fails- but exciting to have hope for this franchise after so many fucking years with garbage at QB.

This is a really good article so thanks for posting as I don't usually read the Tribune. The most interesting thing about it to me was as follows.

And I'll never forget. We played South Carolina the first game of his redshirt sophomore year (2015). It's a game we lost (17-13). Marquise threw three interceptions, two in the score zone (inside the 10-yard line) and one in the red zone. We ended up losing a game that we really dominated. I'll never forget talking to Mitch the next day.

He goes, "I'm exhausted." I go, "What do you mean?" He goes, "Coach, I lived and died on every play in that ballgame the other night. I was ready at any moment that you were going to call my number, and I was going to go in there and I was going to win the game. I believed it wholeheartedly. I mean, I was ready." He goes, "But, Coach, I don't want to play because our team struggles." He didn't want our team to have to lose games to make a change a quarterback for him to play. He said, "I want to play because you believe in me and this team believes that I can go in and get it done."

Shows some class by Trubisky there. Although the one thing I wished they had really drilled into was the thought process for not starting him if they saw all this stuff in practice. Of course, Williams went on to win 11 in a row and had a great season so can't argue with the decision but I would have liked to hear more than just coach speak on the thought process there.

Throwing little guys open is what I noticed on tape. He didn't have a plethora of big wide outs like he has now where he could throw it up, he had to read the system and throw very litlte guys open to spots.

Bug Howard is 6-5 and Mack Hollins is 6-4. Hollins got injured but Howard played the whole season. UNC's offense was basically moving the ball underneath with Switzer and Proehl and then throwing deep to Hollins and Howard. They had a nice mix of underneath WRs and big jump ball specialists. So Trubisky definitely threw underneath to Switzer and Proehl more but he sprinkled in enough deep balls to Howard which is what made UNC's offense pretty potent. Howard was their 2nd leading WR behind Switzer.

Yeah, he had a 85% completion % in 2015 in his limited attempts (40-47). He still had a 68% completion % as a starter last year. The kid is accurate.

Also, look at the 30 TD's to 6 INT's as a starter .... very Rodgers like, imo.

I'm so happy we got this guy! The only knocks on him is he only played 13 games and Run and Shoot doesn't like the fact that he wasn't on the team that won the National Championship. I don't think either are important at all. It has been so obvious to me that he is the best QB in not only this draft but I think he is the best QB that has came out in the last few years. I put him up there with Marriota, Luck, and Wilson. Thank you Ryan Pace for getting us a top 10 QB at a bargain price!

Sounds like a team guy.

Rookie mini-camp should be fun to follow this year.
Usually they report the ball spends more time on the ground than in receivers hands.
Hopefully be different this time !

I haven't read the piece (I will shortly), but man if he could just not decide beforehand and then proceed to stare down his intended receiver and maybe after that learn to look people off, that would be a big upgrade over Cutler.

God damn that website nearly made my PC at work have a stroke. So many ads all over the damn place causing lag and constant refreshing. Still was worth the long read.

As I said in an earlier thread, Trubs is the ant-Cutler. He does not need tall receivers to catch his errant throws. He is accurate and has good timing with his receivers, be they short or tall. He is going to make all his receivers (or at least those who can catch) better because he is going to hit his receivers in stride allowing them to rack up the YAC.

Dallas has learned from New England that shorter shiftier receivers can be very effective in the NFL. That is why Dallas drafted Switzer, Trubs ex teammate who was very effective with Trubs, even though they already have a successful smaller receiver on the team.

I am curious to see how Cohen, Braverman and Kermit Whitfield will do during training camp seeing that they are all smaller shifty receivers with Cohen being fast and Kermit being a blazer.

Fwiw, my friend (who is a live and die NC fan said that when Mack Hollins went down, defenses started playing them differently because they could no longer stretch the field. He said it affected the entire offense and that they never seemed to find an adjustment that worked. (More on the OC than the QB IMO).

I never said anything about him not playing for a NC. I did say he couldn't beat out Williams, he went 1-4 down the stretch in 2016, plus a bowl lost and he only has 13
games of exp.

I put him up there with Marriota, Luck, and Wilson.
He has zero to put him with these guys and u know it. With all that said, I'm happy we drafted a qb

That's not true at all. They stretched the field with Bug Howard. The difference is Hollins was able to outrun more people ad he is 6-4 with 4.5 speed while Howard stretched the field by outjumping people as he's closer to 6-5 with great jump ball skills.

They also adjusted by going to Switzer more which is why his production almost doubled this year and he set the record for receptions at UNC. They worked the underneath more using Switzer and Proehl for their run after the catch ability.

Of course losing Hollins didn't help but by the time he got injured Switzer and Howard had already become UNCs main targets. Hollins was just the occasional deep ball threat.

I wonder why someone who claims to be so well versed on UNC hasn't chimed in on run and shoot's narrative of Mitch not being able to unseat the quarterback ahead of him. Couldn't possibly be because he would be making a positive case for Mitch. Nah couldn't be.

Interesting. I'll see what his reply is to that.
