I read about the show a while back and was interested in seeing if it could live up to it's potential. So I watched a clip where Jeff Daniels' character is in some kind of panel discussion and the question was what makes America great or the greatest country or something like that and he eventually says it isn't. And I was like, okay this is kind of new territory, let's see where they go with it.
Except he then goes on to list how, in the past, we used to stand for more than what we do today (like by propping up brutal dictators in other countries), how we stood up for what was right (minus segregation, equal rights, *** rights, etc,etc that list goes on and on) how we fought for "moral" reasons (greed?), how we struck down laws for "moral" reasons (except of course, if it cost powerful interests money), waged war on poverty not poor people (except if they were black...........or poor) how we didn't identify by who we voted for in the last election (but they did, and also by race, religious affiliation and wealth), how we never used to beat our chest (are you fucking kidding me? On a daily basis) how we didn't scare so easy (except for those indians, jews, blacks, chinamen, commies, japanese, etc, etc, etc), how we were informed (which is an absolute joke back in whenever era he's talking about as it is today) and on and on and on. It was a total bullshit sandwich and it was supposed to actually mean something. At least that's how the writing and portrayal of it made it look.
Felt like Rocky in Rocky III in his first fight with Clubber Lane, each punch was worse than the one before and they just kept coming. Kinda turned me off to the entire show right there in 2 minutes. I was hoping it could be like "The Network" but as a tv series, and maybe it can be, but man, that's a whole lotta bullshit to overcome in that one rant that, I'm guessing, is supposed to help define that character and to introduce him to us for the series.
