Yes, our veterans have been productive this year. I already posted about this, but since you struggle in reading, I will go ahead and post again for you

Soriano has a 129 sOPS+, Soto who has been pretty awful, still has managed a 92 sOPS+, Ramirez has a 105 sOPS+, Fukudome a 130 sOPS+, and Byrd a 116 sOPS+.

So yes, they have been productive except for Soto, but given that he was the top offensive catcher in the league last year, I'll go ahead and take my chances with him having another bounce back year.

What do those numbers mean? I could say Soriano has 129 POPS and Soto has 92 POPS and Ramirez has 105 POPS Fukudome with 130 POPS and Byrd 116 POPS.

POPS are bad for ya. They have sugar and nasty chemicals.

WTF is sOPS+?

OK, I still don't know what it means, and I doubt CO does either.

Well in this case, it is position.

Since you guys don't have the ability to do anything for yourselves and lack basic google skills, I will put this as simply as I can. For every split imaginably, it puts OPS on a level field, with 100 being the average. Basically, it's the OPS for the position. They are all above average for their positions, except Soto.

I kinda fudged up the stats a bit, I looked at their 2011 totals, when I should have gone to the position...

Soriano's LF sOPS+: 133
Ramirez's 3B sOPS+: 108
Soto's C sOPS+: 98
Byrd's CF sOPS+: 108
Fukudome's RF sOPS+: 114

So the Cubs are about average, not above average, and Soto is below average.

Your sig fails so hard.

The Cubs as a team are well below average. Soto is slightly below average. All things considered, that's really good for Soto.

So stop clicking to open the spoiler every time to see if there is anything new... or just don't comment on it.

You should make a thread in the Bar about it called "Sig is unbearable". :smug: Check the thread in the bar "Chat is unbearable" if you don't know what I'm referencing.

:lmao: I thought Soto was a beast last year. People wonder why he hits 8th, he's too inconsistent, which I believe comes from his injuries.

Inconsistency has nothing to do with where he hits. He can always move in the line up. It's not set in stone.

The fact that he was hitting 8th last year is absolutely absurd.

He got more value hitting 8th. If you think he'd have that high of an OBP batting, say, 6th, you are insane.

How did he get more value hitting 8th? That's absolutely ridiculous. There are so many more RBI opportunities hitting 6th.

While his OBP probably wouldn't have been as high, he would have more opportunities to hit guys in, as is LI would be higher.

Adam Dunn hits 40 HR every year not 20 and has OBP of .375+. If Colvin was capable to hit 40 and hit .230 and get on base like Dunn sure. Stanton a 40 HR guy

I think Colvin has 40 HR potential. I mean last years numbers stretched out to 700 puts him at like 35.44 HR's.

I definitely think its there, but the rest of it yeah it just isn't there. I agree with nwfisch that he should have been tried at 1B for the year rather than spending 10 million on Pena.

8th would be about the worst spot for him because he has no discipline. Guys hitting 8th don't get much to hit because of hitting in front of the pitcher.

You don't put guys like Soriano or Barney or Colvin hitting 8th.

You put guys like Soto and Fukudome there (ideally of course, this meaning with a better team)

As Rice Cube says, he seems to have good plate discipline... but... find that post, it was a good post, can't remember it word for word. If he bats 8th it adds walks die to pitching around and intentional walks.

And our best lineup has him batting 8th, using Baseball Musings Lineup Analysis

Barney's walk rate is at the lowest point in his career, but his strikeout rate is also way down. I doubt that moving him in the order really makes that much difference, but I don't see why it would drive his walks way up. I mean it isn't like pitchers are worried that Barney is really going to be able to do that much damage if he hits it.

Also the reason why Barney makes the most sense batting 8th is because he has the least offensive value of the Cubs starting 8 players. You want your best hitters to get the most ABs which is why they bat at the top of the order, and the worst bats at the bottom so they get the fewest.

His MLB career just started last September, so there isn't anything to base his rate off of.

Maybe not hit a HR, but he could hit a bases clearing double
