My garden got FUCKED today......

an absolute monster of a storm ran through here and dropped like six inches of hail, combined with epic rain. It was bad, pepper plants and basically all of the garden got destroyed by hail.

I am not sure what the outcome of this will be, but hopefully things will recover. everything looks REALLY bad right now though.

I've got a small (it's only 6 inches off the ground) raised bed, that is 16 x 4 feet.. We're growing a variety of peppers, variety of cucumbers, variety of tomatoes, string beans, zucchini, and then a variety of herbs.

I've always wanted to try my hand at it, but I've got a lot of squirrels in my yard. Two huge oak trees, it's basically a paradise for them. I think I would need to build enclosures around everything, and that sounds like a pain in the ass.

Squirrels around here have always ignored my garden for the most part. One might get in, take a look around, do a small dig of a few holes, then leave.. When I've done pots, they'll dig holes in it, but again leave it alone.

The thing I have a problem with is rabbits, and only thing I've had work is some rabbit/deer repellent that smells like shit. It doesn't seem to work on squirrels at all, but again, I don't really have a problem with squirrels.

Combination of the two.

Most of my hot peppers are from seed except for standard ghosts and jalapenos, cause they are always at lowes.

We save seeds every year and plant from those.

I do buy tomatoes as well.

Well.....first off....thanks for the tip....the nitrogen did the trick all the peppers are starting to darken up. I plant my peppers just like you. I grow the grandes from seed because you can't find them at lowes. I also grow regular with seed but I always pick up six or so to help. Started all my seeds in late Jan and I am seeing that is not early enough. Gonna start them around Xmas time next year.

Well.....first off....thanks for the tip....the nitrogen did the trick all the peppers are starting to darken up. I plant my peppers just like you. I am glad the nitrogen helped, it looked like the problem from the pictures that you posted.

I also have been struggling to get my seedlings ready for outdoors soon enough, I often end up keeping plants indoors throughout the summer to plant next year and they are fully beast by then. I have seen some alternatives though that other people do that might suit you due to the fact you have indoor growing setup. A lot of people, if they do not get direct sunlight on their seedlings from start (say in a window with good direct light, or a sun room, atrium etc.) will use a grow light over their seed beds to get their seedlings started. Basically they just start vegging the seeds in January/Feb under lights and they are ready to go by season start.

I do not have any indoor lights setup at this point, but I have a friend that offered me an LED light to start peppers with that I am going to try next year. TBH plants that are simply started outdoors seem to do the best.

My next year plans are to do some outdoors from seeds in April and some under lights in January and see where I end up. It kinda becomes a ***** watering/finding a place to keep plants for the whole year to plant outside the following year.

Also, I haven't been around for a few days because we had an EPIC hail storm. It literally shredded everything, amongst other issues that I wont get into.

Basically we are going to see how we end up at this point, but it was like 90 minutes of pure hell. More water than I have ever seen at my house showed up in a few minutes mixed with inches of hail that was like dime sized....

I thought all was going to be lost, but the plants still seem somewhat alive at this point. just mostly shredded all the big leaves off. It was not fun. It was kind of at the time when the peppers started shedding large leaves and replaced them with good hardened leaves, so I am hoping that everything bounces back, but it all kinda remains to be seen at this point. A week or two and I will know what is alive and what got roached by the hail. At this point I think that we probably lost some cantaloupe and some squash, maybe a tomato or two, maybe a pepper or two, and some of the small seedlings in the box and herbs. In all the years I have lived in ABQ I haven't ever seen anything like this. It was scary, epic, and devastating.

In front of my house was a lake of water that was up to the doors on a car parked out front. Not cool at all.

I keep my young peppers in the tent. It is how I germinate them and then they go in solo cups. It just seems they take forever to actually start growing.

Got three 36" raised 4'X12' beds,a pumpkin and squash patch,strawberry plants and four new berry bushes.........all new plantings with large water requirements. Since it stopped raining since I planted....LOL,I'm tryin' to avoid a grabber draggin' hoses all over the fucking place. You'd think I'd just buy the shit at the store.

I'm going to water again now.....if I fail to return......speak well of me.

You will not regret your work. Fresh garden food is 100 times better than store bought.

I'm used to things going dry right after I plant all my stuff but this is ridiculous. No measurable rain by me in I don't know how long and none in the forecast for the next 12 days either.
I can give em what they need to stay alive but they like that rainwater........grass'll be the color of straw soon but I ain't watering all of that shit too.

We normally don't see a drop from April until November. Everything dies unless you water it. Mountains turn from lush green to drab brown.

They've been in just under a month. When I water, I turn a sprinkler on very low as it needs to only wet the raised bed, so if there's any saving grace it is that the 12 hours of water was not at high volume.

They don't look like they're in bad shape. We'll see.
