I think that if Aramis has a solid year the Cubs will exercise his option. Their is no given replacement via the minors (even Vitters at this point) and nothing through free agency. The problem with a Pujols signing is the price. If the Cards Can't afford him that means he is serious about the 10 years at $300 Million idea. That is an insane amount of money for the Cubs. Who wants a 40 year old first baseman making $30 Million a year for TWO MORE YEARS!!!?
But Aramis has to pick it up TOO.
And Rivera is in his 40's, some players are special cases.
Rivera is making like 12 million and continues to put up great numbers. plus hes a Yankee so the money is there to spend on him. 30 million is a lot more money then 12
If he has a good year, you will see him at 3B and Ramirez somewhere else come 2012.
I think you will see Ramirez somewhere else in 2012 regardless unless he agrees to take way less money.....he is not anywhere close to being worth $14 mil.
The Cubs WILL pick up the mutual option unless Vitters really steps up this year. There is nobody to replace him with otherwise, and not many 3B hitting free agency.
But will A-Ram?
There is no Mutual option. It's a team option.
Cot's Baseball Contracts
If we have a chance to get Pujols or Fielder, you better believe he won't be back. So to say that we WILL pick up the option is ridiculous, because neither Pujols nor Fielder's fate has been determined.
Ramirez may void 2012 option, but doing so forfeits $2M buyout

It's listed as a club option, so I was a little misinformed.
But it amounts to the just about same thing when this part is taken into consideration:
With how much money we have after the season are you sure getting A-Ram AND Pujols or Fielder is impossible.
Unfortunately, MLBTR listed a report saying that both sides (Pujols & the Cardinals) are confident that they will reach an 8-year, 240 Million dollar deal.
I didn't say anything about the money.
It's not impossible, but it's not going to happen. Why would you want Ramirez back if we got one of them anyway? He is pretty terrible on defense.

Who else plays 3B if Vitters isn't ready then?
I know you didn't say anything bout the money, but he still can leave even if the club picks up the options, as he can opt out.
Jose Bautista or there is also this thing called a trade.
No, he can't. It's a CLUB option. Not a Mutual option. The club can opt it or not. Not Ramirez.
No, read the quote I posted on the last page from COT's again. RAMIREZ can VOID the club option, but in doing so he LOSES the $2M buyout.
That is so stupid... why wouldn't it just be a mutual?
However, why would Ramirez say no to 16 MM?
Also, A-Ram no longer has a No-Trade clause.
