I rank San Francisco's, Portland's and Washington D.C.'s system as better than Chicago of systems' I've been on. New York's I think goes to more places and tourist hot spots than Chicago's.

Chicago's is better than St. Louis's due to its size and I can't think of any other system I've been on, I was really too young to remember Bostons. Boston-Chicago-NYC are obviously some of the oldest systems in the country as well.

I don't know anything about Portland's, but from what I've read, San Francisco, DC and NYC have better systems. Philadelphia also comes up a lot when people are talking about good mass transit.

But when you compare the CTA to the systems in Atlanta, Houston, LA or most other major metros, it's way better. And that says nothing about suburbs and smaller cities where it really doesn't exist. Chicago's in the top-10 and that's out of hundreds of other cities.

I live near Philly, and have visited NY, DC, and Baltimore. NY and Chicago go #1 and #2 IMO.

One thing I didn't mention about city planning is the grid. I was watching the Alabama game that took place in Atlanta, last Saturday. They kept showing the city and it looks like it was planned by a four-year-old with a crayon. It's just a mess.

On the other hand, the grid in Chicago is about as close to perfect as you're going to get. Even the diagonal streets are laid out in a way that makes sense. And I love knowing exactly how to get somewhere just using the address (i.e., to go from 3600 N. Addison to 2400 W. Irving Park, I need to go 1/2 mile north and 1 mile west).

Beat up old houses, pothole heaven, ridiculous traffic, shitty weather, shitty weather.....what more could you want?

1."Beat up old houses"
Living in a shitty house has everything to do with someones financial situation and nothing to do with geography. I live in a nice house, I'm sorry about your situation.

2. "pothole heaven"
None on my street. I guess road conditions could influence where you live, I don't know anyone that stupid, but it's possible.

3. "shitty weather"
I wear a coat when it's cold. I know lot's of people that left Chicago because of the weather. If the cold bothers you that much, legit reason to move.

4. "ridiculous traffic"
That will happen when you live and work near other people. It's math.

I have never heard of anyone leaving Chicago because they couldn't find nice housing or they hated potholes. Bad weather and not wanting to be around other people are actual reasons to not live here. That other stuff is BS.

People have a misguided sense of pride of where they live. Fact is Chicago is mostly a shithole. Beat up old houses, pothole heaven, ridiculous traffic, shitty weather.....what more could you want?

I can think of 50 places just in this country I would rather live. Step outside your Bridgeport sensibilties and expand your horizons. There is more to life than deep dish pizza.

I've traveled and lived all over the world and the U.S. Chicago is FAR from a shithole, and that inlcudes a lot of places in the states too.

To gain some perspective, spend more than just a few days outside the city before you badmouth it.

You wanna talk about some shitholes, spend some time on the east coast; you'll find some of the dirtiest and ugliest cities in America. Philadelphia and Baltimore are pretty decrepit compared to Chicago.

Or head down to Alabama and Mississippi for a few weeks. I got the opportunity to spend a few weeks in Alabama helping Habitat for Humanity build a home for some very nice people. Shit is real down there. Few jobs, poor wages, and the stifling heat and humidity was hellish. That was the worst poverty I've witnessed so far in the states.

Don't get me started on cities in places like India, Thailand and the Phillipines. You, my friend, need to travel more. Trust me, you'll develop more of an appreciation for Chicago and what it has to offer. Unless you just hate cities in general; that I can understand.

I love the Bears. I love the Forever21 on Michigan Ave. I love the Chicago River. I love that everyone is in just as big of a hurry as me.

But the only thing you could afford in Chicago was a "Beat up old house"?

So how are things in Ethiopia? More house for your money I bet, no pot holes because no roads, no cars so no traffic, no snow, good for you. Your little slice of third world heaven.

BTW I'll put that house description in the same category as your "coincidental" banning / Cali vacation.

I love the Chicago sports scene. Chicagoans are passionate, knowledgeable, and love their sports teams. I live in LA now, and all we have out here are a bunch of bandwagoners who just follow whomever's winning. Case in point, for years the Lakers dominated LA and you would never hear a peep from Clippers fans. Now that the Lakers suck and the Clippers are good, you see Clippers fans all over the place. And it's ridiculous that there's not even an NFL team out here.

I also miss Chicago's public transportation system. I read where some posters were complaining about it, but you should see the public transportation system out here, it's horrendous... inefficient, illogical, and unreliable. It's the reason why most people out here don't even think of using it.

Also, Chicago's downtown with it's architecture and general vibe is great. I love how you can walk around in the evening and hear jazz/blues emanating from various bars around you.

All that being said, I can't stand the Chicago winters, and I wouldn't move back there because of it.

Sticking up for Ommy? Is he back in Cali or could this be a new mafia forming? That would be a formidable alliance.

Not wanting to live in Chicago because other people live in "beat up old houses"? That would be very weird, and very limiting since most places have old houses. So, old houses in other peoples neighborhoods makes Chicago an undesirable place to live? It that what you and your BFF Ommy mean?

No need. He clearly stated that Chicago was an undesirable place to live in part because of "Beat up old houses". If he never lived in one, he is bothered by the fact that these old houses exist in the same metropolitan area.

He's lucky to have found his dream home, where ever that "old home free" place might be.
