Same studio, RGG. One of my favorite series in gaming. Highly recommend going down the Yakuza rabbit hole. I'd start with zero and then just go down the list. Zero is a bit of a slough at first, lots of cut scenes, and the mechanics are kinda janky, but once you get past the first couple hours and look past the mechanics the game is a hell of a lot of fun. The story is fantastic and the game itself is just bizarre as ****. I picked it up a few years ago for 20 bucks, tried it and dismissed it. Thought it wasn't very good. Gave it a second chance when I was out of games and bored and never looked back. There's a reason it has such a cult following.

Recently got my band mates into it. Both dismissed it at first, but at my incessant prodding they tried again and are hooked now.

So far as I could tell they do think the campaign is a tutorial.

The last 2 missions teach you how to fight Infected Mutant and Infected Giants by sending TAB swarms of them at you.

Game is brutal to the player lol.

I still haven't unlocked the last 2 Survival maps because I refuse to do it on anything below medium/normal.

Srs if you find good tactics for the game in general or certain map types, lmk.

Game trends towards forcing your base and army small early and often you lack the resources and space to form a fully secured base.

I've tried going for barracks early to produce lots of rangers, but then you run out of population for resource extraction.

Same happens with soldiers early and you need iron and more gold.

Staying small/quiet and exploring the map with suicide rangers which can grab resource bonuses and then force the swarms to chase them away from the base has been the only workable solution, at least on the more difficult maps.

Try to get wood workshop and ballistas as early as possible and secure an area.

Campaign is a tutorial in a sense of ... hey ya fook figure it out. played 4 maps now, did the 3 swarms and the initial hero maps. IDK how i feel about hero, reminded me of OG starcraft for a minute and is a nice change of pace but hope there isnt a lot of them.. run gun run is boring after a bit.

swarm taught me i can have the same amount of ppl and barricades but lose the 1st time and win the second. how one positions their soldiers behind the barricade matters i guess. can cheese the AI a tad and made the swarm lines move a certain way to kill easier for some reason. doubt thatll be good for much larger swarms.

my first lvl 2 map was fucked. mines of raven.. i didnt know i had to go set up mines on that gold for awhile so kept getting hordes.. but i didnt lose to that first go.. it was a rouge zombie who fucking touched a tent.. tons of infected tents went up like a wildfire and dominoed into game over .. def was user error.. but who knew it kicked off that fast.. maybe that mechanism is too fast..

need to figure out what to get on tech tree..

fucking brutal for sure.. 30-45 mins and over in a sec cause i was in a micro doing something else. but it seemed fair cause i left a gap..

dunno how long until i get to survival.. only playing it a lil here and there.. i know if i just stick to this by itself.. this game will be 100s of hours.. dunno if i wanna grind a rts for that long... cause rdr1 pc calling my name.. finally bought that overpriced decade old bs port. never finished it on console.. maybe 75% before i sold console at the time..

The hero thing and tech tree only exist during the campaign FYI.

I found it a fun change of pace but it gets old pretty quickly.

Survival generates a random map and places your Command Center in the middle, sometimes in the shittiest spot.

You get 1 soldier and 4 rangers to start, and the entire tech tree is available to unlock thru Wood Workshop -> Stone Workshop -> Iron Workshop

You can set zombie population density and time until TAB swarm, that's it.

All Survival games are Ironman mode, I think they fixed the bug that let you kill the process in Task Manager and load from the last time it auto-saved.

Try to unlock all the maps on normal/medium, seems pretty easy, but I've been trying for 5 years.

i tried survival and didnt know it was random seed, read this and retried.

first time on forest the map basically had me in the open and had to extend for resources fairly early. got over extended ran through. im like this game is fucked..

second time was probably perfect seed.. had resources close and close choke points in every direction. lost because i dont know the game and fell into a false sense of security.

thing is i had the resources to expand a large military but had been getting through hordes just fine running around with a ranger breaking up the wave, no issues handling those big fat guys because it wasnt that many. so days 50-68 just half ass expanding now not worried. was only after space at this point to get more warehouses and other resources i didnt even need so i could push gold to 8k storage.

cept on day 68 i think it was they sent tons of fatties to my half ass expanded area of all places. minimal wood defense instead of stone, minimal troops in place. my mobile force was just too small and game over. i had 100+ workers i could have used towards troops, i just didnt know they would send that many fatties.

if i got that map again it would be no issue replaying that im sure but if random who knows

still need to learn tech tree.. atleast its all unlocked in survival

guess some of my play throughs will come down to luck of the seed huh

i dont know what level im on.. challenging.. so maybe medium?

If it makes ya feel any better, I very often find myself doing that mid-game dithering, I think they pace it like that on purpose.

I've been trying to shoot for having the Foundry (Iron Workshop) built by mid-game.

Something else to consider are the role played by the special building like Crystal Palace +800 food or Lightning Spire +800 energy or Academy of Immortals which auto-veterans each new unit.

The Inn gives you lots of population for a small space and amplifies the income from the nearby houses.

I try to leave space near my CC to place Market, Bank, Inn and get maximum out of the main housing.

IMO these are not just bonus add-ons but intended as core gameplay requirements on Survival Mode.

You unlock the special buildings in the Workshops, but the best ones come from Stone and Iron Workshops.

If you can get to mid-game with lots of population, a barracks, and Academy of Immortals, you can pump out veteran soldiers to clear the map.

On Desolate Wasteland (where I'm stuck) the zombie pop on the map tends to swarm your base before you have time to even build a barracks.

Since the game isnt teaching me certain things, imma have to watch youtube for a change. Usually like figuring things out but made it to day 92 of 100 in my third try and was raw dogged. not even close.

so i watched a video and was like wtf is a titan or thanatos this fook has. i really need to learn the tech tree etc. seems i need better balance of colony size too.. last one i kept too small and compact.

i just dont know how large to go and how swarm spawns work.. like if i push colony to the edge of map will the swarm from that side spawn inside my walls or from the edge outside the map and **** me regardless

from day 50-92 i was just spam producing soldiers. about 2 areas held during TAB but wasnt enough fire power overall. the other sides over ran so it didnt even matter.. by TAB kiting rangers dont matter.. but i had built out honeycomb walls at chokes.. they held well for awhile considering i didnt have the firepower to defend them.. those spitters fucked shit up for sure

also learned from the video about clearing map and how those zombies left in world join the party too.

@Ares yeah knowing a lil bit helps. still have alot to learn but beat the first map on survival on the 4th go. helps having executors and other units. i tried doing it with just soldier spams cause i didnt know.

much like 7d2d i tried a spike path for one trail... had built like a spike/wire run with executor on both sides and gates as speed bumps . dunno how much it helped but those zombies got mowed down the quickest.. only did it cause one part of map was ideal for it

next step would be about streamlining the process and being more efficient huh. im not doing maths and playing by set goals and days. anywho now know how the game works in a sense and can play something else while working this in at some point.

that bank, market, inn tip def helped.

@FozzyBear you can absolutely push to the edge of the map and totally wall off the entire map.

I've done it, but yeah you need to get to the Titans so you have a mobile Executor (more/less) to help your soldiers with map swarms.

Something else to note is the Mayors which you choose of 2 options unlock at various population amounts and grant some key bonuses at time.

They seem to be random, sometimes amazingly useful bonus, other times, the bonuses can seem useless.

With Desolate Wasteland I've been trying to get to mid game without being overrun, the lack of space really hurts early/mid-game growth.
