I was looking for what to play next in my PS5 library when I cam across Doki Doki Literature Club.
Some sort of anime highschool waifu dating sim. No interest in playing that. Then I looked at the descriptors "Psychological Horror"
Oh I gotta play this.
Found out this game has a cult following. Honestly it's kinda mid. Love the concept but the execution is just.. boring.
The idea of this game is amazing. I love the concepts laid out in the spoiler section. But in the end it was just boring ... and not really horror. There are like 3 different endings you can get by your choices but I have no desire to sit through that 2 more times. If each play through was like an 1:30 maybe.

The first hour or so of the game is standard dating sim (I assume). You join the high school literature club which only has 4 girl members. You can try and woo 3 of the girls by writing them poems that reflect their interests. This part is really boring. You read slowly produced text backed by still images. Yes there are a few hints that something is off but I almost quit the game here.
At the end of this section, your childhood friend kills herself. The game glitches out at this point a box pops up saying her file is deleted and all you can do is start again. This time that character is completely gone and no one seems to even remember her ever existing. Now there are only two characters you can write poems before. It's clear the game is messed up. There are graphical errors and a bunch of text replaced with gibberish or stuff in another font. At the end of this part another one of the girls stabs herself to death in front of you. You then have to set through a like 25 minute long scene of her body in front of you with random gibberish scrolling across the screen.
What's happened is that one of the characters has become sentient and knows she's in a game. She's programed to be in love with you but she isn't one of the characters you can woo. She's trying to mess with the game to make you choose her but she can't. Eventually she deletes all the other characters.
