I been trying Desolate Wasteland again lately.

I found most strategies on the first 3 maps struggled on the Frozen and Desolate ones.

Desolate I am finding lots of success going ranger and ballista only thru mid-game.

The map has 3 infected mutants and 1 infected giant and the zombies seem to avalanche much easier on this map.

Stealth has seemed to really keep expansion a safe endeavor.

ive been doing rangers with ballista until im set and then start mass producing snipers. might do ranger/ballista pushes too.. unless i get a mayor bonus with soldiers or something im not making anything else early mid.... kind of bored with this strategy, but its worked. beat the first 3 maps a few times each cause ill never play them again im sure.

bs losses on the 4th map the first two goes... the worst was during they are billions swarm. idk how but zombies got behind my walls and knocked out a tesla tower that daisy chained 8 executors and other telsas on the front line in that area.. caught it too late.. tried to build behind them but it was too late. all other areas were cleared. still dunno how they glitched inside.. multi layered deep so runners couldnt just jump that far. one edge was against water so idk if that played a part in it..

been in full tilt since and lost 5-6 in a row cause im not microing fully and trying to push too fast.. leaving gaps.... plus bad rng on the maps.

bought a few games during this steam sale so may want to play something else.. havent played mafia since it released in 2002? definitive edition so maybe it looks decent these days.. member i had to buy a gpu cause my Pentium 4 wouldnt run it.. dunno y but i remember that ATI Radeon 7000..

been long enough where i forget the game too.. never played 2 or 3 either..

I find ranger/ballista primarily helps prevent avalanches or drip-draws.

Sound is more important than I realized early.

yeah i figured out sound fairly quick.. kept getting blitzed.

i like cheesing the AI early when i have at least two ballista in same area.. will kite rangers and lead lil swarms of zombies into them while i build out sniper squads.. a micro battalion of 50 ish snipers and one titan will go mow down the entire map.. maybe 30 will do idk.. but i make 70-100.

by the time snipers ready to roll.. economy is in full swing and ballista become executors..

while i build sniper squad i dont wait til i have 50 to roll out.. once i get about 10 will place them at a POI... usually near doom city but with ballista protection and ill way point newly made snipers to them.. usually have two barracks going.... once i get 15-16 ill creep closer.. eventually ill have 20-30 and theyll start to level and i can take out doom cities.. i time doom destruction with economy to push out executors, spire for electricity quick etc etc.. .. then the crystal palace on that frozen map..

by the time i get to around 50 ill have my first titan join in just to be able to flank quick and then clear out map.. then will produce more snipers for towers or to clear out different section for XP before going to towers. i only make snipers and titans.. no other units except a few archers early game. then i just push out tons of executors at chokes.. while clearing map will put up 2nd n 3rd bank with mo towns for mo moneys in cleared areas. i get the silent beholder too cause i want to see the map

Do you utilize wood stakes much?

I find wood production is easy to amp up on most maps.

Stakes are nice because they only cost wood.

i didnt use much wood last map i beat. the frozen one map 4. bad roll of map.. wasnt near any trees..., was slow early mid. finally caught up mid/late.

i only really used wood walls to shield off ballista and to produce/tech stuff. might make a 4-5 wide shield wall to take on infected or giant.. i do use spikes on the final they are billions swarm. by the time i need walls im using stone

i dont even use gates.

last game i was so behind i only built like 30-40 snipers all game and no other units except for a few rangers and only cleared out 1/2 map but got the doom cities... didnt know if i could win out but wanted to see how OP executors were.. mid/late got funds up to around 2k and caught up, so i just spammed executors... consolidated to 4 chokes and each point had up to 20 executors. in layers... the very outside of wall i just build out random walls for several spaces like honeycomb to slow them and some spikes for a few spaces before they hit the wall speed bump..

now i just have to beat desolated wasteland map to unlock caustic lands..

Same studio, RGG. One of my favorite series in gaming. Highly recommend going down the Yakuza rabbit hole. I'd start with zero and then just go down the list. Zero is a bit of a slough at first, lots of cut scenes, and the mechanics are kinda janky, but once you get past the first couple hours and look past the mechanics the game is a hell of a lot of fun. The story is fantastic and the game itself is just bizarre as ****. I picked it up a few years ago for 20 bucks, tried it and dismissed it. Thought it wasn't very good. Gave it a second chance when I was out of games and bored and never looked back. There's a reason it has such a cult following.

Recently got my band mates into it. Both dismissed it at first, but at my incessant prodding they tried again and are hooked now.

Tried out Yakuza 0 for a tad, seems decent, so i bought the other 6 in the complete series line. steam sale for the first 7 games atm. dont have the last 2? games in the complete series sale.. but 50 ish bucks for 7 games seems aiight.. like a dragon on sale separately and pirates at full price

Will get to it at some point, just have too many choices atm.

@Ares beat desolated wastelands. did have to change up a lil. def had to use more spikes early on because my forces were limited. lots of ranger micro/kiting too

once settled though was the same process of snipers, titans and executors.. just didnt try to really push much until around day 30 and the need for more wood/food.. focused on population, defense first then worked in soldiers, followed by economy back and forth til i was rolling in money. still ended up with 2500 ish peeps and was making nearly 3k at one point.. could have expanded more pop but sunk into easier to handle chokes. still around 80 snipers and 60 executors only a handful of titans cause i didnt expand more. but still nearly cleared out map.. left some randoms and far edge stuff

looked at caustic real quick, its dark as shit..

keeping enemy health bars helped a lot, didnt get any stealth attacks with it on..

@Ares beat caustic. found that map the hardest but still okay.. maybe it was the rolls, but iron seemed slim. also idk why but zombies seemed more agro than normal. plus dark map.

now that its beat, guess im done with the game since no more maps.. shame theres only 6.. did go back and play a plains map to get the 10k population during a single play.. game was def worth the play time..

Can always try beating them all with highest zombie population and lowest amount of time available.

Lol that was my plan till I got stuck in Desolate Wasteland for 2 years.

TBF I often give this game a break, and I don't game as many hours as I once did.

turning up to nightmare/brutal would be hardcore anal micro wise.. maybe one day.. just did rack off 80 hours playing this game so def in the mood for something else.

been playing a lot of games lately.. need to make a dent in the back log, but then i replay something i havent played in years. did install the last of us part II on the ps4 last night when setting up the new monitor.. so i might finally get to that.

I forget what you've played so forgive me if retreads.

Raft (on hard)

Green Hell (on Green Hell difficulty)

IXION is a fun little resource manager/story, I haven't beaten it on hard yet.

yeah played green hell and raft.. wish i could forget green hell so i could play it again like the first time.

raft i cant remember if i beat the story or not.. dunno if it was finished yet at the time.. remember making it tangaroa but unclear if there was anything more after that..

ixion, never played it, but if i was in the mood for a city building resource manager, would get frostpunk 2.. been eyeing it for awhile just havent been in the mood.. enjoyed the 1st one though.

really need to work a few games from back log so i can talk myself into adding wukong and elden ring. hate adding newer games when my backlog keeps staring at me.. only new game that gets an instant buy and will skip the line will be GTA 6.

i did start mafia definitive the other day.. should just finish it.. wont 100% explore and waste time but i swear it wasnt that long of a game.. but cant really remember 2002 and the last time i played it.

LMK if you get Frostpunk 2 and what you think.

I enjoyed the first one but found it very easy and one-dimensional.

Reviews sound like FP2 is more difficult, which would be more fun IMO.

The first time I played Green Hell I didn't understand some of the mechanics and got to experience the depths of the experience when your character starves/thirsts into insanity.

Seems like they updated it quite a bit.

IMO that game needs some randomized elements for the story/map so it has replay value.

Thought about grabbing that bundle, but I'm super slow with finishing RPGs and I still got a couple to get through, so I figure I'll grab it some other time once the backlog is a tiny bit less.

Will be curious how you think of the whole series if you do end up playing through it, I hear pretty good things about it

@FozzyBear you ever play State of Decay 1 or 2?

If they made that game more like a 3rd-person TAB it'd be 10x better.

Still a fun game.

i dont mind picking up those kinds of deals when the game is sitting at near its lowest sales price.. plus 7 games for 50 ish.. yeah okay it can sit there.., its just newer games not on sale or with slight discounts that i know will sit in my backlog.. then ill get in my cheap arse feels when i see the game even cheaper when i finally get around to playing it

i remember i was going to pick up the first one awhile back but kept reading reviews of bugs.. legit complaints?

finished a few games the last couple of days.

mafia definitive, it takes two, subnautica and war for cybertron on pc.

sold war for cybertron pc for a hundo after beating the campaign for the 3rd or 4th time over the years. Hadnt played it in years. Have it and its sequel, fall of cybertron on xbox 360 still.

after finally replaying and beating subnautica this go round, i might give no mans sky a second look after all the updates that poor launched game has gotten... idk

it takes two was better than i expected.. 7.9/10 wish there were lil collectibles, secrets etc to add a lil more content, but was a enjoyable local co op exp.. very creative game...

i member quitting subnautica cause i got lost in the story progression the first time.. i did watch the storyline on youtube a year or so ago so i knew the gist of it coming back in.. kind of spoiled it, but made it more enjoyable. still a decent game overall even with some annoying back tracking..

mafia definitive seemed more streamlined then the OG,, seemed like less missions.. basic easy gameplay.. its more about the story.. still decent from that perspective. about a 10 hour game just following the story and a lil wandering but not much

war for cybertron... part 1 of the best transformers games ever made. too bad the online game modes no longer work.. but the campaign def still guud after all these years.. especially if u are a TFer fan
