I'd easily trade Schwarber before Baez. Contreras/Russell/Baez/Almora is way too strong up the middle to even consider changing IMO.

Serious question... if you're another team who has a young starter you're considering dealing why would you go for Schwarber? I mean I'm probably his biggest proponent here but I think it's a legitimate question. Simply put, Baez is a far safer trade target because at the very least you know what he has floor wise and if he ever figures out a better plate approach his ceiling is just as high. Plus he fits a much wider range of team needs. Schwarber is maybe a LF for other teams and that's it. Baez can play 3 positions that are typically pretty thin in 3B, SS, and 2B.

If people don't want to trade Baez I get it. But I also think if you're being serious about acquiring young pitching you need to come to grips with the fact it's going to hurt. There aren't any more Eloy Jimenez's in the cubs system. I don't think Schwarber gets that sort of trade done with any team. Some teams perhaps buy into the bat enough but I'd wager a majority of teams are going to ask for Baez first. Given Happ's year some might even ask for him before Schwarber. And maybe you can work a deal around Happ but I frankly think teams are going to want more.

Baez is a guy that can put his team on his back. But he also has his short comings.

As far as trade value goes he can get a quality return. The fact that this is a argument proves that

If I had to sit down and really mill it over: from the left side after Rizzo there is not a 2nd lhb that really scares you. From the right side after Bryant Contreras can cause worry.

So thinking of it that way Schwarber > Baez.

From a D perspective Schwarber is under rated. Baez makes the stand out plays.

Now as far as a back up SS? Ya this is a concern if Russell injured again. But honestly this is a issue they created by trading minor league depth and shifting gears to pitching.

Honestly I’m concerned less finding a back up SS via F/A vs a SP that replaces Jake.

Now if I just viewed this from a D perspective Schwarber would be gone in a deal. But I’m really questioning if the hit to the O is greater with Baez gone or Schwarber gone. Happ is another potential chip but I’m not sure if he moves the needle enough to get someone like Archer.

Another option would be to re-sign Wade then invest in the middle relief. Then convert Edwards back into a starting pitcher

Schwarber probably has huge value to an AL team as a DH who can play LF and maybe learn to play 1B eventually..

I can see taking that risk on a young power bat like Schwarb over a young SP if their need is for that more then the SP..

Maybe... I don't know I just don't feel like teams actually value DH only guys because there are so many options for filling that where as if you need a SS or 3B there's only so many guys in baseball out there. To me it's similar to the way NFL teams avoid RB's early in the draft these days because you can find lots of guy to fill it.

Ask the Stroes GM how that went?

Honestly it is pretty funnly seeing peeps devaluing a 30 HR season and saying that is equal to a huge maybe. Too many of the maybe types end up not making it vs a guy who just got done hitting 30 HR’s at the highest level in his 1st full season....

You have to be realistic here. The only time you see deals like that is for 3 month rental in a pennant season. Even then few work out

Your Edwards comment is very intriguing to me.

I was commenting on the notion Schwarber is underrated on defense

If he would get traded to an AL team as a DH, he has added value, because he can play a position. He doesn't pass the Gibbons Test, but he is passable to get his bat in the lineup when AL clubs are on NL fields.

Honestly if that was a thing it would bring durability as the main concern. Stuff wise you can pretty much bank on him.

Now I would approach him as you would need a piggy back starter like Montgomery just to keep his pitch count under control in his first season.

Then my 2nd area of concern would be AAA depth. If they can keep Mills and Butler it makes sense if the kid goes down. You may promote Underwood as he did take a step forward last year. But in general they should keep AAA filled with starters with MLB innings logged in.

That way they would have 3 RHSP next year. Edwards the stuff guy. Hendricks the professor and Tseng who has a wide arsonal of pitches to attack with. Honestly all 3 have such diffrent styles you could go 3-5 and really not worry about teams getting a handle on them.

Durability isn't the concern it's his ability to throw strikes. He has a career 4.63 bb/9 and a 5.16 bb/9 this year.

It is a huge maybe. Out of 181 players who got 450+ PA, Kyle ranked 111 in offensive production according to Fangraphs. Scott Schebler hit 30 HR with similar slash lines (.223/.307/.484 for Schebler v .211/.315/.467 for Schwarber).

Look, I get there is potential in that bat but you can't trade on potential after a year this bad. His value is obviously lower now than it was in the middle of 2015 or 2016.

The Cubs have no option but to ride it out with Kyle because he's not the centerpiece of a trade; no team is giving up either a current TOR arm nor an arm that projects to be TOR for a guy who just had a .315 OBP at age 24.

A starters mentality is not the same as a bull pen arm’s. A starter is more about establishing the strike zone early then widen it as the game goes on. A bull pen arm is looking for the strike out and has little pitch count concerns.

As a starter he would have to depend on fastball command and he has one of the highest spin rates which translates to pitch movement. Then he would have to establish 2 secondary pitches to complement. He already has a plus breaking pitch and a cut fastball might induce easy outs which he will need.

Doubt they trade at low value. Baez has higher value right now. Potentially Schwarber could avg 40-50 HR’s per

Hed be a DH LFer and maybe 1B eventually..

I think an AL team looking for some extra power would love to have his bat in lineup
