What was your first BIG purchase that you made by yourself?

Probably either my $1,700 iMac or the time I paid $1,800 to break out of an apartment lease. Both were probably my first big purchases of that magnitude in terms of spending it all at once.

Summer after high school (2003) I bought my own car. Before that I used family vehicles. It was a 1990 Cadillac Eldorado. Paid $1200. Drove it for...about two years I guess. During that time I replaced a control arm, fuel pump, alternator and plug wires I think. Maybe $5-700 worth of stuff. Got into an accident with minor quarter panel damage and pocketed the $900. Turned around and sold it a few months later for like $900. Basically broke even. Gotta love cheap cars sometimes.

I bought myself a $600 computer when I was 16 [mostly birthday money]. Then I paid $7,000 dollars for my car when I was 18. My parents pitched in $4,000 [so 11K total on the car] I've been pretty broke since then... should have saved that and just bought a shitty ass car instead.

I don't know what is considered a big purchase. I don't spend my money on small things often, so nearly all of my purchases are the same cycle, even as a kid. Save for something big, buy, save again...

I put a good down payment on my first house at 18. No first time homebuyer grants. But I also spent $8k on a 1 year old, smashed up 240SX to restore when I was 15, and $1k on my first non-pass me down/dumpster-find component set for a computer(amiga parts including an expansion board that allowed you to put ram chips on, in parallel (not memory sticks, the actual chips that had to be installed with extreme precision) and I think I had 8 128kb chips for a whopping 1mb of slow ram, a sound magic sampler, and some VGA converter(which were pricey back then) .
