What were the 70s like?

You didn't have to organize things as much either. We used to play road hockey every Sunday during fall and winter. Always at a local tennis court. Nobody ever called to set it up, you just went and joined in.

You actually knew the first names of neighbours down the street.

There was a hell of a lot more eye contact when walking down the street or on a bus.

Random, but how horrible was it when you had no plans on a weekend and you couldn't get a hold of anyone to make any? Nowadays you can just mass text everyone. Back then I'm sure if someone didn't answer the home phone, you had to go out looking for em.

I don't see how that was specific to the 70's. It was like that in the 80's and 90's too.

And because sex was easy, nobody really masturbated. There was no reason to. It was shameful if you did, not like today where it is celebrated.

I was born in '76 so the 80s was pretty much my childhood. Malcore's description certainly sounds a lot like how I recall the 80s. But I'm quite prepared to believe it was even more so in the 70s. I hate that we've lost that. There's so many ways life seems cold compared to then.

Yeah, I could be a bit guilty of romanticizing my childhood. Shoot me Les.

To any of the older guys here, what were the 70s like? Are the stereotypes we see on TV true? A lot of hippies, everyone smoking weed, experimental drugs, etc.? Also, how was racism back then, compared to how it is now?

Obviously I can just watch a documentary or read stuff on it, but I just want to know what you guys observed in the 70s. Just general thoughts about the 70s, if you don't mind sharing.

70's weren't bad..I don't think there was as much hippy activity as the late 60s. It was pretty common in the late 60s...The heavier drugs (cocaine) started in the late 70's and mostly 80's as I remember. The big thing in the 70s was the AIDS scare..The misinformation was really bad..Course, officials didnt know much either so everyone was kneejerk

As far as racism, every decade got better..I remember it was real bad in the 50s, then it got better and better as time went on

Half right.

******** was the absolute worst thing you could call anyone, total shame. Did guys still **********? All the time.

I would bang a chick at lunch, rub one out at 2, then bang another after school at 4.

Everybody masturbates, always have, always will. Some things never change. That has become common knowledge, back in the day it was quite the dirty secret. Back then it was more scandalous than fucking.

I remember there was this story going around about a guy who picked up a girl in a bar and took her to his place...She gave him a *******. He fell asleep and when he woke up she was gone. On his bathroom mirror she wrote in lipstick.."welcome to the world of aids"..Then later she was found and she had aids in her gums and she had given it to him...lol

At the time guys were shitting their pants!!

I remember most gays had the good sense to stay n the closet.

Really? We had openly *** neighbors on the other block and across the park. Nobody really thought anything of it. I think TV perception and maybe some parts of the country had this as true. But Chicago(for the most part) really didn't give a shit if a guy was into dudes.

Don't you remember? In the 70s, only *** people got aids.

There was no AIDS in the '70's. That is an '80's thing that changed everything.

Again, the worst case scenario back then was pregnancy.

STD's were funny, syphilis and gonorrhea were a joke. We would laugh on our way out of the clinic. One shot, cured. Next.

It kind of freaks me out, how ancient and foreign my youth seems now.
