I dont beleive your sample size suggests he has anything figured out. Given his stint on the DL he might have lost what he gain

Sure he might start slow again but this is a high ceiling player who has flashed that several times in the last 2 years. The kid has only played in about 200 games in AAA or above so he deserves to be cut a little slack. Soler is not my favorite player, I don't love his baseball instincts and I don't he maximizes his tools defensively and sometimes at the plate. That said your consistent dismissing of him entirely makes me look like the biggest Soler fan in the world in comparison.

But the month before that was a big enough sample?

I dont see him as a high ceiling type player. Neither do the Cubs which is why they have been trying hard to trade his ass

No they are not. two teams are ahead of them in wins (SF and TEX).
The Cubs week long struggle sucks but I feel worse about how good the Giants are. Anything can happen with trades, and injuries, and hot or cold streaks but I think SF is the best team in the NL.

He was the first signing for Theo as a Cub exec. He gave him 30 million. He wanted him over Puig. Theo def. thinks he has a high ceiling.

I agree. But no worries, the best team does not always win come playoff time.

In terms of talent I think Washington, SF and Chicago are within arguing rights of equal. San Francisco is playing the best ball right now and have withstood a couple of key injuries. The Cubs have dealt with their own injuries and while Washington has remained relatively healthy. When it comes to the playoffs it's all about match ups and who gets hot when.

If he has, and all we have is anecdotal evidence, it's because he plays a position of strength going forward and it takes talent to get talent. I'm tired of this idea that you only trade guys who you don't like.

I never said that. But it's no secret and reported endlessly that Soler's name was prominantly discussed in trade discussioms

and I bet some team brought up Bryant's name, but neither that nor your point is germane to my original point

Baez has been in trade rumors for two years not just brought up. Lol

The injuries are definitely playing a part, but it's also a 162 game season. Skids like this happen.

The starting pitching is starting to come back down to earth. Mix that in with injuries to Fowler, Soler, LaStella, etc and this was bound to happen. Still 9 up, which is fine. That lead starts to shrink a little more and I'll be worried.

The pen's era has risen every month. That is a big part of it. The injuries have hurt some but for the most part the replacements have not been bad at all.

The biggest issue has been the rotation falling back to the norm with the pen becoming less stable. The run support has been in flux all season anyways. Now we are seeing the staff giving up 4+ runs per vs the 1-3 runs per game before.

It was unrealistic that the starters would sustain that.

Which makes me think they need to make a mega deal for a guy like Chapman. It pushes every one back. 8-9 would be shut down. 7th you sit on Wood and Strop. Earlier inning lean on Cahill. I would trade out Grimm in the deal as he has been one of the main problems in the pen.

The rest you rotate out with AAA for the match ups in MR.

It is a long season. They'll get hot again and this funk won't mean a thing. At this point, the best teams I've seen are the Cubs, Rangers, Giants and Nationals. The Red Sox could join that group if they can add a decent starter. I expect one of them will win the WS.

Of course the Cubs are the best team in the NL. They have a better winning pct than the Giants who have been hot as hell lately. They are not going to keep the pace up that they have been setting the last 2 weeks. They are also playing a weak ass schedule. Last I saw they played the Phillies like 7 times in the past two weeks...

The Giants WIN in the playoffs. The Giants WIN World Series.

The Cubs have a Baltimore Orioles transplant (best player) and some sophomore/junior players that are VERY good.

But they're not going to win the World Series.

They're gonna... Cubs.
