What’s Wrong with Carlos Pena? | FanGraphs Baseball

The fact that he might be platooned and is struggling in an offensive environment does not speak well for Pena’s chances to cash in on the open market next season- the hope he had when he signed with Chicago. As for the Cubs, if Pena never regains his power stroke, their investment is limited. It does not look like they will recoup the 2.5 wins they paid for, but it still was a risk worth taking,

There is more at the link thats just the end.

Dewey you can ignore :D

I don't see how Colvin is that much of an improvement. Baker has been hitting faaaar better, but you lose defense with both players over Pena.

Pena could easily have 4-5 HRs this year. I know you can't really say almost or close, but let's get real. I've seen at least 5 balls of his get caught at the wall this year in games, including 2 yesterday. At least he's not hitting weak balls every time he makes contact. His strikeouts are high, but he also has the most walks on the team. No one expected his BA to be great or his SO to be low, he just needs those deep balls to get over the wall.

No, he is done. We are better served with Colvin and Baker playing there. Not joking, not overreacting, this guy could never hit.

Minus over 200 career home runs..

yeah he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. :smug2:

The longball is dead in this day and age. Well not completely dead but if thats all your good for, your good for nothing.

From 2007 to 2010 dudes average has dropped from .282 to .196. Impressive eh? even more impressive in that he is 11 for 70 so far this year with only 1 extra base hit.

Waste of 10 mil

Colvin will improve, he isn't batting well now but he is young and more at bats will help him.

Agreed. I hated the Pena signing from the start and I thought they should have continued developing Colvin to be a first baseman. They drafted Colvin in the first round, give the guy the at-bats that he needs.

I remember most people saying that Colvin had no business being a first round pick.

Pena has proven he will do two things: hit for power and get on base. His BA is a terrible way to evaluate what he can bring to the table. It sucks he hasn't produced yet but he is going to shut everyone up IMO.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the statement of getting Colvin more at-bats. Like I said, I was hoping that the Cubs would have continued to develop Colvin at first but they signed Pena and it was a move I didn't care for.

There's still time for Pena to turn it around but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I didn't quote you about you're comments being wrong.

I think its fair to want Colvin to get more at-bats. Personally, I'm not as convinced on Colvin as many Cubs fans are. Plus, youve gotta worry about his defense. If there is anything Pena has done well this year it is his D.

I know you didn't quote me, I'm commenting on what you said about the other guy's comments.

I agree that Pena has been good defensively and yes there is a liability with Colvin playing first but if he's out there, he has a chance to get better. We'll never know if we don't see him play there on a consistent basis.

Well, my quote wasn't really intended at anything about Colvin.

I am mostly irritated at people thinking
A: Pena has never been good.
B: He won't turn it around.
C: Using his BA to prove that he sucks.

EDIT: And I'm not saying he has been good this year cause he hasnt been.

Those are three valid things to be pissed about. I know you aren't accusing me of being one of those people. I will admit though that I didn't like the Pena signing mainly because of the season he had last year and because I really wanted them to groom Colvin into a first baseman.
