Is it humid? I've done key west and Jamaica and while it was beautiful the humidity made me never want to go back. I'm looking for an island experience without as much humidity.

Bora bora? No

This. But precisely the opposite. Hawaii is one of the planet's great treasures and about my favorite nearby island(s) to decompress, especially Lana'i and Maui..

What other islands have you been to?

You're missing out, Hawaii is fucking amazing. I'd avoid Oahu for the most part unless you know a local; but Maui (leeward) is fucking incredible, as are Molokai and Kauai. The big island has 7 different climates depending upon altitude (and you can bike through all of them in a single day if you want).

Been to Hawaii, the Dominican has more beauty for 300% less vacation expense.

Been to Puerto Rico, same result.

I always enjoy visiting the in-laws in Panama. I'd like to visit other central american countries as well. I've always wanted to drive the Pan-American highway down to Panama, wish it wasn't so unsafe.

I've always wanted to take an extended trip to Europe and visit all the places I was stationed 25 years ago in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy. I'd like to do all the tourist things I never did as a drunken yewt in those places. 3 years stationed in the UK, prolonged TDY trips to Spain, Italy, Germany and did not do much sight seeing.

I've always wanted to hike the Appalachian trail, and the Continental divide.

When I was younger and an avid bicycler I always wanted to ride across all 48 continental states and maybe Hawaii. Not sure you could bike Alaska though, maybe portions in the summer.

I've been to a handful in Asia, and quite a few in the Caribbean. To be fair, because of its proximity to me (CA.) I've been to Hawaii many, many more times then any other island. But I also do like it better in terms of climate and hospitality.

Respect your opinion, every one has their own value system. I haven't been to the Dominican, but you;re the first person I've ever heard characterize it so highly.

As for PR, WTF? Been a couple times, wish I hadn't - too damn hard to get to from CA, and once there I found it incredibly underwhelming. I get invited to an all-paid-for biz conference in PR every other year and I have declined it the past 6 years.

Having lived in the DR 4/2 years, I'm biased. But I also have a friend who sells real estate in Cabrera, DR. He is a former underwater photographer, who of course has been around the globe several times.

According to him, the 3 top spots on the planet are:
1. Eastern Cuba
2. Micronesia, which I believe includes Bora Bora, Fiji etc.
3. The DR, where he chose to semi-retire.

While I do love Hawaii, one cannot find nice hotel rooms for $30/night or plates of fresh lobster for $5...which includes a Presidente beer.:)

I hear you on PR, not much to see there outside of a rain forest...which is pretty cool and the only one in the Caribbean. Plus they are on the US $.

You also don't need a passport for the DR, $20 on the plane gets you a tourist card valid for 90 days.

Not counting places I've already been:

My wife wants to see Hawaii. I'm non-plussed by it but someday I'll give it a shot.

My wife wants to take me to Paris in the offseason sometime. Again, Non-plussed (I have no need to see the Arc de Capitulation), but might do it just to say I've done it--but I'll take my licks like a man and not hide the fact that I'm an American .

I've wanted to see Poland (Auschwitz, Krakow, and Warsaw).

I've wanted to take the Trans-siberian railroad from start to finish.

I've wanted to see Tierra del Fuego.

And my wife and I are planning to do an Alaska cruise for our next anniversary.

Greatest cruise I have taken. Suggestion........spend the extra money and get a balcony. We spent 10 days sitting on the balcony enjoying the whales. And the one day you go to the glazier the bow and stern are packed 30 people deep as the ship spins slowly in a circle. We just sat on our balcony and took 100's of pictures.

Been to: Tokyo, Yokosuka,Sasabo, Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Viet Nam, Midway, Mexico, Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia,

my only issue is that we live on an island with beaches, mountains, snow, desert, rain forest more islands etc.. AND there is a lot of places here we could go discover. since im not native and havent been to a lot of places in oz, there is tons for me to explore. the wife doesnt find oz exotic being thats shes from here and takes it for granted i suppose.. but come on who wouldnt want to go swin in a pink lake next to the ocean - it makes me think of bubble gum and pepto.

however, if she wanted to go to hawaii on a foodcation, i'd be down. Its just her palette is really lacking and my hope for foodcations are slim to none. I'll get one when she makes us go to disney world when our son is 6-7 in the next 4-5 years (shes already planning :yep:). Ive already suggested landing in LA/SF and driving to Florida through various states.

Plus, i have to school the son on the USA cereal isle. I gotta show him how to mix cinnamon toast crunch with golden grahams etc etc..

No childhood would be complete without it.

I was in Jamaica about 15 years ago. It seemed like everywhere I went, people were trying to sell me drugs. I was relaxing on the beach, someone says, "Pssssst... you want some cocaine???" Then I went to a street vendor that was selling some beautiful and colorful shells. They were placed in a plastic box filled with water because apparently they looked better underwater. The vendor had me put on some goggles so that I could view them underwater, so I stuck my head in the water and as I was admiring their beauty, I saw the vendor's hand move across my face and took the shell I was looking at, moved it to the side, and revealed several bags of cocaine. Lol

This has got to be true. I've seen the same side of Jamaica. Lol
