I was a Senior in High School. I woke up right after the first plane crashed and saw the second one hit. I didn't go to school that day. Actually, I don't remember why I wasn't in class already. Was probably ditching first hour. My uncle lives in NY, so we were trying to get a hold of him. A teacher from one of my classes actually tried to give me shit for not showing up that day. Told her I didn't give a damn about her pointless class LOL. I thought about joining the armed forces after that, but I wasn't eighteen yet, and I'm honestly glad I didn't. How the political machine used this as an excuse to invade Iraq and take away our freedoms under the guise of safety completely disgusted me. I look back on this incident as the day America died.

I was going to college and working full time at a supermarket in Indiana. The first plane hit just before I woke up. Then my phone rang. It was my ex-girlfriend telling me to put the TV on and I was asking what happened and what channel. She said "Every channel is overing this," and they were.
I got ready for my morning class and went, because my university didn't cancel classes until the afternoon. No one wanted to be there. My future wife was in Chicago, and got the last South Shore home before everyone shut down everything.

I went to work and humped a 2nd shift and remembered how insanely dead the store was. No one was grocery shopping. One of my managers was freaking the **** out, so I basically needed to ditch him and his crazy "end of days" rhetoric. I then thought that I needed gas, because my tank was on E. When I left work, people were jammed into gas stations filling up 55 gallon drums and stockpiling gas. It took me almost 30 minutes just to get to the pump. I gassed up and went home for the night, turning on the TV and seeing the footage, but what irked mw was the blatant, immediate propaganda by the networks.
I went outside for a smoke. Above my apartment was a flight path. They sky was eerily empty all night.

I live in California, so it happened early here. I was asleep, and my phone kept ringing at around 6-6:30. I was like, who the **** is calling me right now. It was my friend who told me to turn on the TV. I was in disbelief. People out here were freaking out, thinking an attack was imminent on the West coast. There were no planes in the sky, but I would hear the occasional fighter jet roar every once in a while. I didn't go to work and canceled my appointments. I don't think most people made it in to work that day.

Just to lighten the mood slightly.

So in college I had a roommate who is Palestinian.... he was born there and his family came to the States when he was like 4 or 5.

His birthday is on 9/11.

So one day we were drinking and I asked him "What was 9/11/2001 like for you.... did you still go out for your bday? Did you have a party hat and a noisemaker?"

He goes "Yeah.... we went out to dinner.... it was kinda awkward"

I just had this image of him and his family somehow being oblivious to 9/11 happening and then partying for his bday.... then someone turns the restaurant TV on and glares at them.... and collectively his family like "Ohhhh mah badddd".... he shot beer out his nose at that image, was a good night.

In addition to the victims and their families, I also felt bad for the middle eastern people living here. I remember the day after the attacks, some Indian guy (not even Middle Eastern, lol) asked me for directions. He was being overly nice with me and was wearing an American flag pin on his shirt. I was thinking that he was probably catching shit from some ignorant people.

Similarly, my local 7-11 clerk's name was Mahmoud. Very cool guy, I would see him almost everyday. Well, I went to his store a couple days after the attacks and he was wearing a new name tag. No longer was he "Mahmoud".... his name tag now read "Bob."

Yeah... my Palestinian roommate and one of his friends were out walking around sometime within a week after the attacks and they got chased by some psychos in a pickup truck, luckily they escaped and there was no confrontation.... but yeah I feel bad about shit like that having happened.

I felt worse for him because his bday is now a day of sorrowful remembrance for everyone else.

My grandma's birthday was 9/11 and a college friend of mine as well.

On a plane from Grand Rapids to Ohare. I think the first tower was hit as we taxied to the gate at Ohare. I was suposed to fly back the next day but ended up having my wife drive to Chicago to retrieve my ass.

Sleeping before class. Sisters called me up and hurriedly told me to turn on the TV. Thought her or my folks did something weird to get their 15 minutes of fame.

Couldn't have been more wrong.
