Will comment later, at work now. $20-$30 is the sweet spot for great domestic reds. When you pay more, you're just paying more b/c of a limited quantity from a well-known producer. It's that simple. Any idiot can make beer, but it takes a lot more to make wine.

I actually take offense to such suggestions. As a beer snob I can say that craft breweries like Goose Island for instance do in fact take a long time to make certain types of beers. For instance Sofie and Matilda are beers that are bottled in champagne grade bottles and have a shelf life of roughly 5 years AFTER bottling as the beer keeps fermenting inside of the bottle.

As a beer, wine, scotch, and sake snob I will say they all have their chances to be fucked up. I actually think wine is easier, you don't have to hit a certain target every time due to variables often out of your control. I mean, Bud Light is piss water, but it is the exact same piss water every fucking time.

You forgot to mention you are a tequila snob......

My favourite Mexican is Frida Khalo, whom I suspect is a distant aunt of our own hbk.

What is your fave?

It's technically not tequila, but it's in the same family (sort of like whiskey, scotch, and bourbon being related but not exactly the same): Hacienda de Chihuahua sotol. It's an incredibly smooth relative of tequila. Basically it's made from a different plant but from almost the exact same process. It tastes a lot like tequila but not quite. Shit's expensive and hard to find though (I usually have to order it special [most liquor stores will do that for you]).

My comparison has always been tequila = whiskey, mescal = bourbon, sotol = scotch.

A tequila you should be able to find readily at places like Binny's which is affordable and pretty solid quality is San Matias tequila. Its a black, long skinny bottle. Price varies from vendor to vendor of course but Binny's price is like $39.99 and I have certainly seen them for under $30 at other liquor stores. The bottle usually says "Gran Reserva" on it and its by category an "Extra Anejo" tequila so its at least aged 3 years: http://www.sanmatias.com/san-matias-gran-reserva

Dollar for dollar good luck finding something better. Doesn't happen very often.
