You find a wolf thread in the strangest places :D I know quite a bit about them if you have any questions. I trapped and hunted them full time in winter for 20 years, 1970s and 80s, in a small eskimo village in the Brooks Range in the Alaskan arctic. Trapping, snaring and chasing and shooting them from snowmachines and dogsleds. It was a big spiritual animal to the people I lived with and you pretty much had to kill one to be considered a man back then. They looked at them like spiritual brothers because both the wolves and the people hunted and killed the same animal to survive- Caribou. It's changed a lot now but that was how it was. They mostly killed them for the money for the hide, or the bounty or for ruffs for the parkas. They have been hunted for so long almost all wolves will head the other way fast if they see or smell humans. It's one of the first things the pups are taught is to avoid humans or anything with their smell on it. The best experience I had that didn't involve killing them was one time I was hiking up to a mountain in september in the foothills and I crested a small hill and came face to face with 5 wolves 20 feet away. It was a female and her 4 pups that were 7 months old and 3/4 her size. She freaks and bares he teeth and gives me the "you're gonna die SNARL". She shoots a quick glance at the pups and they immediately bolt full speed down the hills into the valley. I just stood there and never made one movement as she snarled and gave me the evil yellow eyes. I had a .45 sidearm but never considered pulling it. We both knew what to do. She continued to snarl until the pups were half way across the valley headed to the next mountain then she just bolted away after them. I sat on the hill for a long time watching them disappear up a far mountain. One of my trapping partners called me a couple years ago and wanted me to take this wolf pup he found lost on the tundra and was raising. He said the neighbors didn't like it because the kids were always trying to go close to it. I told him no as I've had wolf hybrids and they are too much work. 10 times worse than raising kids. Shortly after that it broke the chain and a neighbor shot it. Here's a pic of that pup and another pic of a different wolf shot from snowmachine here and the last pic is a friend with a wolf he snared a couple miles from my house. I pretty much quit hunting everything a few years back so save your PETA crap for somebody else :D

There is a Wolf sanctuary here in WNC called, " Brother Wolf ". They take in Wolf and 1/2 wolf animals with special license. Kind of cool, to raise money they have full moon events where you bring a picnic, hang out until they wolf start to bay at the moon. One of the caretakers comes over to Basketball, she dates one of my team mates, she's brought one of her 1/2 wolf charges to a game. Amazing animal. Big paws, big head, white face, icy stare, big dog. Once an animal goes to Brother Wolf it is there for its life, they don't adopt them out.

Also, found out owning a 1/2 wolf animal is against local animal control ordinances here.

Interesting thread, interesting pictures.

Yeah, man... I'm not really down with the whole hunting animals for fun thing. If they threaten your life, okay. But to go out and kill them for fun is just kinda messed up to me.

Did the bear try to attack you? Is that why you (or whoever these people in this photograph are) killed this bear?

No, one of those guys is a friend. They hunted it for a trophy. Kodiak Brown Bear. These Browns/Grizz are probably the only animal people kill not for the meat. It's highly regulated and doesn't affect the overall population of Bears.

Wow. What strong, impressive men lol. It takes a real man to kill an animal.

Not trying to be a rude *****. I just have a real issue with killing animals for funsies. I can understand if you really need to eat the animal or build your dwelling from their pelts but just for fun is sick.

Yes, that's your right to feel that way. The majority of people in alaska have fun killing their own meat and fish. It's a way of life and it's passed down to the little kids so no one will ever take away their rights.

If they utilize the different materials they can procure from the whale then more power to them. But if it's just for shits and giggles, it's stupid.

I would probably tend to agree with you, maybe :D I never hunted for trophy and eat what I killed but it seems to me there is also a place for the trophy hunters because the law says there is. Knock yourself trying to change the law. Yapping at me won't change anything :D

And I don't expect to :) I'm just voicing my outrage.

So you advocate using illegal, inhumane and stupid weapons to kill animals. What weapons do the people who kill the animals for your hamburgers and steaks use?
