How about the Battle of the Bulge? that shit seemed scary as ****. You sit in a hole for a month straight getting bombed to oblivion and you can't do a damn thing about it. You just have to freeze in your hole and wait.

yeah man shit woulda been fuckin crazy for sure

I'd like too read some books on the battles in the pacific

there were some epic battles between the US and Japan it feels like the war with the Japanese gets overshadowed but it was an epic conflict all in its own

any good recommendations?

The bulk of the aid from lend lease occurred after the German advance was halted outside of Moscow due in part to the winter. It was definitely a massive help and again I would say it accelerated the German defeat but I still think defeat was inevitable without it. The Germans simply had no answer for the fact the USSR relocated most of their production past the Ural Mountains which was largely out of reach of German bombers. Without lend lease, the Russians would have had to focus more resources on producing the equipment that the US provided but it was production they were capable of achieving.

Of course, we will never know the truth or not so in the end, I suppose we can agree to disagree.

meh really it was a toss up without the Us in the equation I think it's a testament to the german war machine that it took all 3 major powers at the time too stop them. remove any of the three and the world would look vastly different today

my dad just got back from Normandy a few weeks ago. He visited Omaha, Utah, Pointe Du Hoc, Carentan, Caen, Ste. Mere Eglise, etc. He brought me back sand from the beaches, pieces of the bunker he managed to chip off, etc.

He has so many pictures. made me jealous as ****. He even took a video of him walking from the water to the sea wall on Omaha. That shit is a lot further than it seems. Insane. And the German bunkers werent shooting dead on, they were shooting on angles so we couldn't shoot at them from the beach. Basically 2 bunkers would make an X while crossfiring.

Talk about a blood bath.
It was a bloodbath and while it still probably would have had quite a bit of causalities, what really fucked it up was the tanks never got ashore at Omaha. The fact they took the beach without tanks is a miracle within itself. It also just shows the amount of manpower the US had to go ashore on that beach.

The only German general who guessed Omaha was Rommel, who was overruled. As a result of this, the largest Panzer divisions were located north defending deserted beaches. By the time the Germans realized their mistake, it was much too late to reinforce.

Of course the Allies knew all this, having broken the enigma codes. Even the Battle of the Bulge was known in advance, but was dismissed by high command.

Germany had Britain on the brink of surrender at Dunkirk. It was only because Hitler had a soft spot for the English that he didnt finish the job and annihilate them. With Britain surrender the US would have had no reason to enter the war in the west.

Didn't Hitler keep hoping Britain would sue for peace and then become Allies with Germany?

Never heard that one. But Hitler was actually an Anglophile and liked the Brits while he disrespected all other Europeans

The Germans had the best army, soldiers and war technology in the world but Hitler was a terrible war strategist. The most difficult thing is to occupy territory aand he should have known it impossible to occupy 1/4 of the civilized world. For what reason and for how long? Even if he had defeated Russia they would have still regrouped, then what?

He should have wiped out the Brits then claimed the parts of France, Poland, Check, etc he wanted and left Russia alone

Until a certain point, Hitler hoped for a British-German alliance. I think after 1938 he realized that would not happen and thus decided Britain eventually needed to be destroyed.

But yeah, the strategy was awful, but you can say Hitler was a greedy **** as well in the sense that he had Russian pinned perfectly, yet couldn't wait to invade.

No, Hitler didnt believe Britain needed to be destroyed or he would have done it. He let them off the hook like Tom Brady does to the Bears everytime he could drop a hundo on their asses.

ND is horrible.
Hitler was an Anglophile.....

Now did that include the Jews of England?

Did that include Polish refugees that were there like Josef Conrad?

Did that include communist and Labor folks?

Hitler liked the fact he thought a lot of British people looked like Vikings and that kind of shit got his weener hard. The isn't the same as loving England.

What I wonder about most, is if the US would have still turned out to become such a war hungry nation.

Yes. They were already one.

I'm not so sure the US would follow the same path overseas. Then again, so much changes, yet, nothing does. Churchill has many spiritual successors in the neocons. Fascism(by definition, and not just willy nilly confusing it with nazi-ism out of laziness) is still springing out of influential self-identified socialists. Capones are cartels. Ness is Sabet. Willys are AMG. Boeing is still Boeing.

If the US did nothing, that doesn't mean no other nation would cease to intervene. Crucial mistakes would have been made. New generations would have very different opinions. I don't buy into the notion that Axis powers would have any bit greater success without US intervention.

It wasn't so much that Hitler was a poor strategist. His racist ideology was simply so powerful that it overruled logic. And he didn't just love the British. The British, French and Germans were all ultimately from the same genetic stock in Hitler's opinion ie they were all Aryans in some respect. The Jews, Slavs, Romani, etc. were all subhuman. Hitler knew full well that Germany lost WWI in large part because they had to fight a two front war yet instead of honoring the non-aggression pact he signed with Stalin, his racism against Slavic people made him attack them anyway before he had wrapped up the war on the Western Front.

His war against France and Britain was simply to avenge WWI and because he needed to defeat them in order to ensure German supremacy over Europe. You could say in the arena of war, it was just business. France and Britain had to go down in order for Germany to rise but he never really sought their total annihilation so much as he wanted to humiliate them and then have them serve Germany.

His war against the Russians was largely driven by fanatical hatred of them as people and that was ultimately his downfall. He was too impatient because he wanted them eventually wiped from existence just like the Jews.

It was Hitler who directed the Luftwaffe to shift bombing targets from British airfields to London. Huge strategical mistake, and certainly not indicative of any mercy.

It was Hitler who divided the German army in Russia, to the protest of every general.

It was Hitler who constantly sacked commanding officers, for losing unwinnable battles.

He was a very poor strategist, and the main reason Germany lost.

Didn't that happen because Germany made a mistake in which they missed a bombing target and hit or school or something, so the British retaliated by boming something in Germany, in which the Germans then escalated from there?
