That's why I would definitely not do it for Kobe. Kobe has maybe 2-3 more good years in him. Yes you may win a title in that window, but long term he's on the downslope.

These questions are so tough because is it a straight up trade? What happens to CAP flexibility? What other moves can we make/not make? Etc etc

You would trade Rose for Howard and Melo but not Lebron???

Relax. I'm at work and piecing shit together.

This is an interesting subject in a way.

What IMO it boils down to is really where you have Rose ranked among all NBA players.

Top 10? Top15? Top 20? Then, based on that would you trade him for the players ranked above him given a certain set of parameters.

Just spitballing for the hell of it My Top guys in the NBA before Rose(somewhat maybe in order)

Lebron
Kobe
Wade
Durant
Melo
Howard
Paul
D-Williams
Dirk

Those are the ones that spring to mind right away.

Now some would have Westbrook, Rondo, maybe Garnett, Pierce, Duncan, Roy, Bosh, Nash, Gasol etc ahead of Rose at this point as well. The list could fluctuate a lot once you get outside of the Top 8 or so. Rose IMO rightnow is a top 10-15 player in the NBA so that would mean straight up I would trade him for the 9 or 14 guys ahead of him if it existed in a vacuum.

Start throwing in important factors like age, wear and tear, system, how they'd fit in with the Bulls as constrcuted and the list starts to narrow down. For the sake of argument I'll use those 9 guys above and look at a straight up deal for Rose(outside of a vacuum as it's more fun that way)

Lebron: Yes. As much as I hate the guy he's the best player in the league right now.

Kobe: No...but not by much. Only 2-3 good years left on him and he doesn't play the point. I think trading for Kobe now would but the Bulls closer to a championship over the short term but long term if we could keep Rose and find another good SG in the next 2-3 seasons we'd be better equipped for the long run.

Wade: Yes..but not by much. Wear and tear is high but he can play point and as of now I think he is a better player than Rose and will remain so for another 3-4 seasons.

Durant: Yes. In a nanosecond.

Melo: Yes. Top 5 player right now. Still young, not as beat up in some ways as some guys like Lebron, Kobe, and Wade are due to his playing style.

Dwight Howard: Yes. Elite defensive center. Still very young. Developing a very nice offensive game right now. Would create a log jam at center and PF but would allow us to trade Noah for a very good player from another team. Teaming Boozer and Howard down low would be an incredible tandem.

Paul: Yes. Tied for best PG in the game right now. Young and showing no signs of any lingering issues from his injury

Williams: Other best PG in the game right now. Young, physical, can shoot, and is a very good defender.

Dirk: Leaning no. Older, past his peak. While still an elite level player I view him a bit like Kobe. Only 2-3 really good years left in him. Leaves a hole at the point and don't get real longevity out of the trade.

FirstTimer, your post proves that you have a very good feel as a would-be GM. But I think you are selling Rose just a little bit short. On that "debatable list" of Westbrook, Rondo, maybe Garnett, Pierce, Duncan, Roy, Bosh, Nash, Gasol etc, I would take Rose over each and any of those guys in little more than a nonosecond (with the exception of Gasol).

^this pretty much sums up how I feel.

Durant is the only one that I would be like "god damn... ship Rose the F out right now."

Howard would be a tough call.

Bryant, Wade, Paul, Williams... those are big thinkers. But I'd likely go with no for varying reasons for each player.

I honestly think Rose might be the better player over 'Melo.

yep, i was gonna say howard, but he hasnt shown to be a dominate center when it counts. he still lacks a low post go to move. if he had the post moves of duncan when he was in his prime, i would of definitely said howard. but as of now, durant.

Those weren't my "debatables"

I said "some would have" meaning that others may have Rose higher or lower than me personally. I wasn't ranking them higher than Rose or even saying I felt that I felt like there was a debate. I was listing players "some" may have listed higher than Rose.

Not me.

Nobody. I would not trade him for another PG like mentioned before. Rose has proven himself in our system. Not sure CP3 or Westbrook would do any better. Rose is a killer with a killers mindset. LeBron is still the best talent in the league but i hate him at the same time. LeBron is not a winner and is now a cancer to any team he plays for. I might consider Dwight howard because he is the best bigman in the game, but what would we do with Howard and Noah and no PG. That leaves really only Durant, but I think Rose makes the players around him better and more so then Durant does. Durant is perhaps the better player of the two, but Rose is from Chicago and I just love the way he balls.

Nope.

Even if it means getting a very good player in return. Derrick Rose is our guy, you don't get rid of him.

This is a purely emotional appeal which doesn't make for a strong argument.

I'd trade Rose for Durant. Rose is definitely have the better season so far but Durant going to come back strong, and it's not as though he's slumping much now anyway.

There shouldnt even be an argument, this answer to the question at hand is based off opinion. Some people will use attachment as a basis for why they wouldnt. Some would use stats, age, leadership, etc etc. Theres no wrong answer.

Durant has improved quite a bit defensively this season from what I have seen, he is using his length and has better footwork now. I think his improved defense in the playoffs against the Lakers and specifically against Kobe Bryant improved his confidence in that area quite a bit. I think he is a very rare athlete.

However, because of what I see in Rose, I may have to recant what I have said about taking Rose over Durant simply because Rose may be just as rare an athlete. Its a close argument, the power positions in the league it seems are point guards and small forwards. Lebron skill wise is just otherworldly...but the Durant/Rose argument is worth having at this point because of Rose's improvement this season.

I still think wing players like Durant have a better chance of leading you to a title than a PG.

I understand Rose is a rare athletic point guard and we'll have to do how he continues to progress but history is on the side of Durant.

I'd have a tough time trading him for anyone also. The only one I would trade for if I must.....would be Kevin Durant. (like most of you have said)

I would trade Rose for Dwight Howard or Kevin Durant.

If u could get Howard, then u could just trade Noah for someone like Carmelo.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Bulls
I can only speak for myself, trading Rose for anyone would cheapen the Bulls. I don't like Yankee style management. I know the Yankees have made a lot of money with the Steinbrenner/Jerry Jones style of luring players in, but it's not for me. It's makes the sport boring. Almost like cheating, because while the moves are legal, it demonstrates how unbalanced the league can be.

If you trade Rose, you trade away a part of Chicago. It's rare to have a hometown boy with this much game playing at the level Rose is playing. Even LeBron wasn't from Cleveland. Anyone who was born/raised and lives in Chicago(while they may not agree with me) knows how special Rose is and where I am coming from.
