Would you vote them in?

I think you make a strawman assumption that the blank ballot was turned in because the voter wanted it to be all about them. You also assume that by turning in a blank ballot it does nothing for the sport. I don't like the blank ballot or the Pete Rose only ballot but I understand it. I see the wanting to make a change. I see the voter trying to add some definition to the voting/election process. And it gets much more conversation about the sport which as you know any publicity is good publicity and thus making a solid contribution to the sport. We definitely disagree here.

Can you really say that someone like Ken Gurnick, who voted for Jack Morris instead of Greg Maddux last year and made a public spectacle of himself while doing it wasn't doing it for his own ego and publicity? I fail to see how his personal publicity was good for the game. That wasn't making a point, that was Gurnick being a self aggrandizing asshole.

I do nout doubt your story. I do not recall it at all. Do some cast bad ballots? Of course. Are some looking for fame? Probably. But you were difinitive and there are your PR are wrong.

Honestly man, you are one of the most difficult characters in all of the internet. PR was not saying that at all and I suspect you know that.

That's exactly what he said in his example. I'd be open for civil correction

Ok here is exactly what he said

Tiger Woods before the famous incident was on his way to obliterating Jack Nicklaus' major wins record. As is Tiger will finish with 14 Major wins to Nicklaus' 18. There are no golfers current or on the horizon who are not getting covered because they are "great" golfers. The true greats of any game come along only so often.

What he's saying is that sports as a whole only transcend their intrinsic audience when their is a transcended player to make that happen. Tiger was a very special case that served the PGA well. There isn't a golfer right now, today that is capable of making the kind of cultural impact that Tiger did because they do not possess the same total skill set which includes image, looks, natural speaking skills and above all a unique approach to the game. Why has LeBron James not had the same impact on the NBA that Michael Jordan did? Is it media because I watched those teams and the media covering the NBA today dwarfs what it was in Jordan's day. In other words the media can only do so much, there needs to be a special talent to reach what you labeled as the fringes or the casual fan. The hardcore fans of the sport don't need media or anything else to get them to pay attention. The general talent and the love of the game are enough.

So the elite were used in the example. baseball is going very solid and they have no one that transcends the game via culture.
We cannot prove this, but the NBA would not be so strong in the late 80's early 90's if not for the lakers, celtics, malone, barkley, olajuwon, ewing, etc. Michael transcended the game, but the NBA needs more. It's why Lebron isn't viewed the same IMO.

I am with you, but the reverse is true as well. Without the media coverage the players would have no job.

LOL, do you seriously think that? DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THAT?

Without the media the fans would know nothing of the game to attend and thus no players. It's why you don't have 10,000 fans watching your whiffle ball game in your back yard. I don't think it's much more complicated than that.

This is fucking stupid.

You should build starmen, because your posts often seem as if they are from outer space.

Stupid auto correct. But I can see why some of you have issues with my posts.
