Not quite. The best postulate for the purpose of the appendix is that is it a vestigal cecum, which is used for digesting cellulose and other tough plant material in other primates.
However, some of the "secondary" functions that it currently does is maintaning gut flora and recovery from diarreha (sp?), and some immunity fuctions.
