Incredible! Not counting fuel and other consumables, how much would the annual maintenance run? $20k?

Provided nothing major went wrong (e.g. an engine), probably something like that on a newer boat for general maintenance, doing an annual haul out, fixing shit that breaks etc. Also gotta factor in slip fees, which can get a little high b/c it's 50' long and twice as wide as a monohull. Fuel costs are actually pretty reasonable....if you're not in a hurry :) Just sit around and wait for good wind.

Disclaimer: Not 100% sure, because I've never owned anything that big (yet). But something like $20-30k sounds reasonable for the first several years on a newish boat. On an older vessel, it would be a lot more.

I know i"m late to the party here, but as mentioned first thing I would do is pay off all my debt. Then I would take the remaining money and live normal just as I am right now as I invest the remaining money as best I can in order to ensure enough returned that I can live comfortably without actually spending any of the next egg. i would make all that money make money for me and live off that while making sure to roll a percentage back into the original investment so that hopefully my working investment income would continue to increase and I'd never run out of money. This way i would never have to worry about blowing through the original 10 million. I could still live comfortably and not have to work, and initially I'd still stay at work and have healthcare insurance which would be the real fucked up problem with having 10 million dollars and quiting your job. Could all be lost in an instance to medical bills if you don't have good insurance. Which is expensive on your own.

Pay off debt. Then come on here and brag about how rich I am as I sit in my house alone, with no friends.

SERE, if you want a good read check out this site:

www.bumfuzzle.com/2003/09/01/septemberoctober-2003/

A young Chicago couple buys a 35' cat, sails around the world and documents the whole trip. You'll get more than enough maintenance stories in there :) It's long...they made a book out of it. But I got hooked after reading a few posts some years back.
