It's risk-reward. Part of the intrigue of Armstead is how raw he is. He also has the frame to put on a lot more weight. I also think Armstead has phenomenal agility for his size and does a great job of maintaining leverage despite being 6-7. He was also double-teamed constantly last season because he would just physically dominate anyone who tried to block him one-on-one, which should be factored into any consideration of his production.
I compare Armstead a bit to Ra'Shede Hageman from last year. Both are obviously talented, huge guys, who would dominate from time to time. But just as dominant as they were sometimes, just as invisible they were a lot of the time. I almost always came away a bit disappointed when watching the two, because even though they showed signs of their potential, they just didn't do it enough.
Last year I could've lived with us taking a chance on Hageman in the 2nd round. This year I can live with us taking a chance on Armstead in the 2nd. But I don't want to spend a higher pick on him, just as I didn't want to with Hageman last year.
