I think it was a pretty good draft overall. Don't really care for the new bonus limits, but the owners are trying to find a way to increase their profits. It's a predecessor to a payroll cap, undoubtedly... which I have mixed feelings on. Would have been better if the holdouts signed, but that was an unlikely venture to begin with. Glad we managed to get Almora, but honestly, would have been almost as satisfied with not getting him and having two top 7 picks next year (and a greater bonus pool due to it).

If Theo, Jed, and Jason McCleod believe as strongly as they apparently do in Almora than I am glad they got him. I just was holding out hope that they would get a few more of these guys to go underslot to make a run at some of those interesting post 10 round guys. I knew Wiseman was an extreme long shot, but I really liked what I read about that Tomscha guy. I was hoping we would get him. Again doesn't make this is a bad draft, but getting a few those guys had the possibility of upping the strength of this draft.

If the new CBA hadn't existed I'd like to think that everyone would've been signed, but since they put a cap on the money...well, y'know. If the Cubs were a contender or if they had a sure-fire can't-miss guy I guess they would've risked losing a draft pick, but overall you can't be too unhappy about this year :)

Oh I agree entirely. I've watched a ton of video on Almora. I've read many scouting reports. This kid looks like the real deal. On top of that, he's has one of the best work ethics of a ball player I've ever heard of, nonetheless seen. He's also reported to take coaching very, very well. Not many guys are talented or skilled enough to compete well with the college kids and international amateurs on the big international stage... and he's been prominent there.

I would have liked to have seen a bit left after to offer to a couple of guys sub round 10, but here isn't much wriggle room there. Also, we should have bet that as soon as Boras knew what the Cubs had left in their pool... Almora would get all of it.

As much as we ***** about the new CBA, it limits everyone, and the fact that we are bad it gives us more money than a lot of franchises to spend. I think the new CBA give us some itneresting opportunities that might not have existed in the old draft environment. I'll try to be clear here about my feelings of the draft. I am happy with what they;ve done. I was just hoping that we could add a few more guys to the system. It was probably unreasonable to expect given what has happened, but I do have a touch of disappointment not getting a few more intriguing upside guys that they picked in rounds after 10.

Should probably fault the previous regime for not giving the new guys something better to work with, and for not taking advantage of the previous system to apply the "Tampa Bay Special" to the draft. I'm pretty sure the Cubs did pretty much the best they could given the circumstances, and yeah, I'm disappointed too, but within the scope of the new rules they did fine. Too bad they have to pay the 75% tax, but hey, it's only money, right?

If the previous regime had been using the "Tampa Bay Special" there is a chance they might still be in place. I agree they did the best they could, and am happy to see them go right up to the limit. I just wish that they way they went up to the limit was slightly different.

If they were to alter the way they got up to the spending limit then either they let a bunch of players drop or they punted most of the top 10 rounds like Toronto did. I don't think there was anything they might have done too differently given that the kids were greedy little bastards and wanted every penny they could suck up. I'd love to see some other clever plan like what the Astros did, but the Astros were incredibly fortunate that things fell as they did for Houston.

A Loria owned team doing something shady for its own benefit, I'm simply shocked...
