Potential issues for the Flames, though, are his questionable puck-possession skills and high shooting percentage in 2011-12.
His Corsi Rel, a stat that tracks puck possession, was No. 7 among Detroit's regular forwards. The fact that 19.7 percent of shots found the net is also a red flag. That's significantly above the NHL norm, five more points than Hudler's previous career high (14.8 in 2008-09) and more than double his percentage from 2010-11 (9.5).
Those facts don't necessarily mean that Hudler's incapable of continuing to produce at his 2011-12 rate, but they certainly suggest that he'll regress. If he were to have shot at around a 14.8 percent rate this past season, he'd have scored 19 goals. That's a nice number, but not an ideal one for a player you'd theoretically count on for offense and not much else.
