The 2007 ratings dropped because of the betting scandals. I would guess the rating growth has improved as time has healed those wounds.
Ratings in general were poor until the Celtics-Lakers Finals in 08.

All those Spurs Finals got awful ratings as did many of the LA Lakers ones.

I'm not disagreeing. Just saying that the betting scandal did everything a number of steps further, as far as damaging the league and its reputation. No scandal, then the NBA could have rode on LeBron and the whole second coming thing(with actual success).

TV ratings for NBA have been on a steady rise for years & the sport is the most popular it's been worldwide than ever. The previous TV contract was essentially stealing money from the NBA. Due to that, a new contract was negotiated at a higher price. It's happened in almost every major sport in this country (not sure about soccer but I mean really who watches soccer in the US anyway).

Inflation my man, it's just a fact of life. And as Scoot said, we, the fans, are paying for it.

I just do not get it. I think what I am saying is that I really do not see the product better nor as exciting. The revenue increase must be coming in from somewhere else as far as I am concerned. Maybe it is coming in from foreign cities and markets because I cannot believe that the average fans in the United states are buying into the product being better or more worth watching. It just isn't. They might be also getting more revenue from sports bars and such but even that market has got to be getting used up.

I decided this year that I won't re-sign up for the NFL package because of the way that game has gone. Two years ago it was the baseball package that I quit. The previous year it was the Bulls and I sure as heck won't sign up for it again. The product is just not worth watching for me. I rather now go out and watch high school and college games along with minor league baseball and hockey.

I thought the betting scandal broke after the 2007 Finals?

It may have affected ratings in the 07-08 season, but the actual 2008 Finals had people watching due to the opponents (Lakers-Celtics).

Yeah. I was going off memory. You're right, the info came out 2 weeks after the finals were over.

I was thinking it was right after or around the draft.

The post Jordan Finals all pretty much had poor ratings, which always led me to believe the NBA just lost a lot of casual fans after Jordan retired..... 10 years later, people seemed to be over the loss of Jordan and either the NBA had a bunch of new fans or people were pulled back in.

IN addition, haven't NBA Finals ratings been getting higher and higher every year since that lowly Cleveland/San Antonio Final in 2007?

I mean LA vs Boston is always a ratings grabber..then the whole "EVERYONE WANTS TO WATCH AND HOPE THE HEAT LOSE" Finals series for 4 years.

Yea after that Finals the LA/Boston rivalry helped bring back the ratings. Then Lebron/Wade/Bosh made the big 3 which was a HUGE boost in NBA ratings, merch sales, etc. Then came Linsanity which sparked a massive growth in international sales (thanks to China). Add to that, more and more Euro players coming over to the NBA, the product is taking the world by storm now. That to me is why the new TV deal is such a dramatic increase.

It has much less to do with the actual quality of the product but rather the exposure of more people to the product.

Chinese interest has been there since Yao so I'd call that more of a rekindling than anything. Chinese people already love Kobe and Lebron and back when Garnett, Iverson, and McGrady were in their prime they were very popular as well (holy crap that was like 10 years ago).

Regardless, it had a major effect on the game internationally. The NBA was not playing exhibition games overseas every year back then like they are now. NBA's Without Borders program also has helped. The main point is, more people in the world are watching the NBA now than ever before.

Yeah there's definitely way more international interest in the NBA than there has been.

Toronto lost to New Orleans tonight, putting the Bulls only 1.5 back from the 2nd seed.

Detroit just smashed Washington. Maybe we can feel less bad about losing to them. No...it was still bad. :(

Maybe its time we give the coach in Detroit some credit. He has won in the past and he seems to have this team on an upswing. And he has made some daring moves too.

How much credit should he really get?

They're 23-33.

On this day last year, what was their record? 23-33. Exactly the same.

They may wind up with a couple of more wins at the end, but I think that'll be more due to the addition of Reggie Jackson.

Stan has done a fantastic job

cutting Josh Smith should get him executive of the year

Pistons had been on a upswing until Jennings got hurt who was playing great under SVG

maybe Reggie Jack can give them that same kind of impact

I think anyone that got hired was going to get rid of Smith. I think that seemed obvious shortly after the Pistons signed Smith.

Also, how the hell was Jennings "fantastic" under SVG? I thought he looked the same. Hell, the Pistons have looked better since he got injured.

Jennings always has big games here and there. He even goes 1-2 weeks where he's really hot, then goes another month where he can't hit shit. He's been that way since his rookie year. Shit, he looked phenomenal his first month in the league and then regressed every month after that. It's just who he is.
