CINCINNATI -- The Cubs are expected to open the second half with Jake Arrieta, Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood in line to face the D-backs. But what happens next?

Manager Rick Renteria said he'll meet with general manager Jed Hoyer and others to discuss who will fill the rotation spots created by last Friday's trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Athletics.

The Cubs have plenty of pitchers to chose from, Renteria said, including Dan Straily, who was acquired in the deal with Oakland. Others to be considered are right-handers Kyle Hendricks and Dallas Beeler, who made his second big league start Wednesday, and lefty Tsuyoshi Wada. Hendricks made his Major League debut Thursday, and Wada made his first start in the U.S. big leagues on Tuesday.

"I would say all of them are [in the mix]," Renteria said Thursday. "I would say you can't discount anybody."

CINCINNATI -- The Cubs optioned right-handed pitcher Dallas Beeler to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and selected right-hander Kyle Hendricks from the Minor League team. Hendricks made his Major League debut Thursday in the series finale against the Reds.

Beeler gave up four runs over five innings in the Cubs' 4-1 loss to the Reds on Wednesday in his second big league start.

The Cubs have yet to decide how they'll fill the two vacancies in the rotation created by last Friday's trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the A's. Jake Arrieta, Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson will start the final three games before the All-Star break at Wrigley Field against the Braves.

Hendricks was 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts at Triple-A Iowa. He is one rotation option, as is right-hander Dan Straily, who was acquired in the deal with Oakland.

Interesting to see how it shakes out.

I would go with Wada and Hendricks personally.

I think they start with hendricks and straily..
Hendricks is basically their future over beeler and wada and I think their gonna want to see what they have in Straily

I believe the will treat him the same way they treated Arreita. Fix him first them let him take that success to the next level vs tossing him into the fire.

They know what they are doing.

The problem is he lacks Arrieta's velocity. Arrieta's fastball is in the mid 90's with late break slider at 87-92. Straily's fastball avg's 88-89. Slider is good but more traditional in the 82 mph range.

He is IMO another Grimm.

Wada on the other hand is LH. Gives him a clear advantage and his FBall avg's 91 MPH. Add to is his BB/9 is 2.25 SO/9 9.2.

You could do worse. WHIP 1.19 ERA 2.84. Only guy in the rotation with a ERA below 3.50.

Age works against him but I'm expecting them to sign an ace and Wada deserves an extended visit due to his AAA performance.

I wouldn't hold my breath. But with the DBags version of Edwin on the hill for them, I hope our offense shows up tonight. This could be a game that scores 10+ for each club haha

4 days without baseball, and we come back to Edwin Effing Jackson?

How can ANY OTHER HUMAN not be rested enough to start instead?

Lets see. He is matching up against Cahill. Seems like an even match.

Miley gets Wood then Arrieta vs Collmenter.

The match ups are decent. VS giving up a loss day 3.

Jim Deshaies was saying last night that Kyle Hendricks would be a #4 or a #5. I really don't see that. I was thinking once CJ Edwards is promoted that Edwards would be the #1 and Hendricks #2.

How do those guys leap over Arrieta?

Tell me about it.

I see them dumping into an ace in the offseason.

Ideal
Lester
Arrieta
Wood
Hendricks
Jackson

I see Edwards in AAA next year and them trying to offload Jackson late that year and back filling with Edwards.

Now 5 years down the road Edwards may develop into an ace but that is not anytime soon.

I think the Cubs are going for the worst record in the league. The only reason to trot Jackson out first. If this is not a tank move the entire staff needs to be fired.

Hendricks is a back of the rotation starter. Lets not rehash Randy Wells 2.0. If he can produce innings and keep us in ball games thats all you can ask.

I think he can be more of a 3 honestly but definitely not a top of the rotation guy unless he suddenly develops a big out pitch. But then I really value control more than stuff so i'm probably high on him.

He works from 90 down to the 70's. Add to it he controls both sides of the plate. Wells just had a slider.
