Sparty would rather lose to say I told you so.
I hate seeing the Bears lose but fact is when you sign an injury prone QB to a 7 year contract and he's only been to the playoffs once in 8 years, you're telling your fan base you don't care about losing.

I think Jay Cutler can win a Superbowl under two conditions.

1. If the entire team around him is very solid. If we have a great defense, they can cancel out any mistakes we know Jay will eventually make. He's got a good offense in place for him, but the defense is horrendous and the ST was pretty terrible this past season as well. Given the contract he just signed [assuming the yearly amount is pretty high], the Bears won't be able to give him a GREAT defense and special teams unless they strike gold in the draft.

2. He has this offense in place and the defense and ST is good enough for elite QB's like Manning, Brady, Rodgers, etc. to win a Superbowl. But, Cutler would have to string together 3-4 AMAZING games to pull in off. Like Joe Flacco last season. Flacco in the post-season threw for 11 TD's, 0 INT's and had a QB rating of 117.2. Could Cutler do the same? Idk about that, tbh.
How many amazing games has Peyton Manning had and how many SB rings does he own?

as opposed to rooting for the Bears to be handcuffed by Cutler instead of pursuing a more consistent option that would limit turnovers and take them into the playoffs routinely?

:bears: Really?? You all talk about Jay Cutler being the worst QB ever??!! What did the Chicago Bears have at QB before Cutler that was a better option??? Tell me who was better at QB for the Bears before Cutler???? Yeah no one since what the 1940's, but jay suck right? Who is a better option right now than Cutler?? Yeah no one, This team can go McCown but there will be film on him in this system and many will see why he was a journeyman, and you can draft a rookie QB and go through the growing pains and hope he pans out as an elite qb like so many drool for, their are only about 5 elite qb's in the NFL for a reason they are hard to come by and when you have an above average QB you stick with him. Ask half of the GM's in the NFL if they wouldn't take Cutler to be their QB, I can say with all confidence they would say, YES!!! YES!!!! YES!!

It seems like my beloved Bears have been taking a lot of L's lately and this cutler signing is definitely an L. The guy never plays a full season, always misses with some weak ass suspect injury like a sprained pinky on his non throwing hand , and almost never shows up in the big game. The only one to win out this deal is cutler.

The Chicago curse continues..

Keeping Cutler was always the better option. We can draft a young guy behind him and if/when the time comes, he can take over if Jay isn't living up to his contract.

A hard transition like some idiots would want here would just set the franchise back

There really isn't a more consistent option at this point. There are a number of gambles, but there's no guarantee of any of the quarterbacks coming out of the draft (specifically in the Bears case)

I think it's that those people that value the Super Bowl over everything else can't look past his two rings. His style of play is all risk/reward. For me he's a little too inconsistent to love, but I completely respect his ability to stand in harms way waiting for any chance that comes. I just think the success that comes from that kind of game is unsustainable.

And I think that's what keeps Ben from being considered elite like Manning, Brady, Rodgers and Brees. I'd say he's a top 8 QB though.

Bear fans don't seem to realize that there is no guarantee of drafting success at the quarterback position. So they draft a QB next year. What if he doesn't turn out? Draft another one? Or another one? That's three seasons of nothing at the quarterback position and your offense is gone.

I get that Trestman has a history of developing quarterbacks, but he's not a miracle worker, and he is unlikely to find immediate production later in the draft. Now he and Emery have time to figure it out with a solid starter.

God help me, I just read all 18 pages, mostly looking for contract details. Without knowing I reserve the right to change my opinion but overall I'm pleased:

* We don't have an elite qb but we have a franchise qb we can win with locked up. Jay will have some shit games here and there but he will win more than he loses and this offense has not come close to its ceiling.

* The speed with which Phil got deals done with Slauson and Jennings is impressive.

* $50 mil guaranteed is the price of poker in today's NFL. Sucks and in few years when he starts to decline we will hate it just like we hated the ass-end of Angelo's deal with Peppers. That's life.

* Phil is going to lock up one of the premier defensive FAs as soon as they can sign. Just like with Bushrod, people will whine that he overpaid.

FA won't really begin until after the SB is over. It's gonna be another month, not two weeks.

I am going to go out on a limb and say if Cutler won a Super Bowl and we made the playoffs consistently over the life of his new deal, all of this haters would be happy to eat crow.
