Based on this info, I worked the numbers out myself. I know all the rules and loopholes to the NBA salary cap, but I'm unfamiliar to the NFL one so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

2014: 3m 10.8m 13.80m
2015: 5m 10.8m 15.80m
2016: 7m 10.8m 17.80m
2017: 10m 10.8m 20.80m
2018: 11m 10.8m 21.80m
2019: 18m 0 18.00m
2020: 18m 0 18.00m
Total 72m 54.0m 126.04m

I also wanted to continue on this, it would essentially make this a 5 year $90 million deal correct?

Every Bears fan lost today. Some are just too stupid to know it.

Well, let's just hope that by signing Cutler to this massive contract, he will finally be able to turn the corner and overcome the refs so the Bears can win.

I would rather have Jay at 18 million than

Stafford at 17.6
Romo at 17.1
Ryan at 20

Those guys have all had more to work with and done less and I don't think any of them are going to win anything before Cutler.

Stafford has a 2-23 record against teams that finish the season with winning records and just collapsed in the home stretch.

Obviously moving to a 3-4.

Out of curiosity, why do folks think that Shea can pass rush any better out of a 3-4? He can't pass rush at all. Maybe blitz, but not pass rush. For what I think, we stay 4-3 and they try Shea out at MLB, if he makes an impression great, if he doesn't so be it. Move Bostic over to ILB, probably even draft a LB. Time will tell.

7 for 126 is 18 per year. But I'd imagine it's heavily backloaded. Which means we'll end up paying way less than 18/year.

The question is how much is in the signing bonus (which can be spread for 5 years). And then how much is each of the first five years salary. That's his real contract. After that he'll get dumped when his salary is something crazy like 25 mil a year the last two years.

This could be a very Bears friendly contract, even with 126 mil be the number.

$54 million is guaranteed. I don't believe the $54 million has to be only in the form of a sigining bonus.

I don't know why you are faulted for this stance.

I actually believe the Bears CAN win with Cutler, but I haven't seen enough proof to validate my belief. I guess I just want to believe that this guy can get it done now that next year he will have been in the system for more than a year and will have the protection he needs overall continuity that offensive excellence demands.

But I don't blame anyone for thinking it's naive to have this belief. I can't blame anyone for being frustrated with Cutler either. I don't understand the irrational exuberance of Bearsbud and Desperado even if I want to believe that "their guy" can be a successful franchise quarterback.

I bet he would have signed for 6 yrs 100 million.
The thing is they could have given him a 20 yr/ 500M contract, it doesnt matter. The important #'s are signing bonus and salaries in the first 4-5 yrs. The later years of JC's contract are like Peppers current deal, he wasn't going to see the $14M base salary in 2014 even if he had a good yr. Those numbers are for show and average. They actually allow for a lower early cap # without appearing to be a low priced deal.

Because when they used him on the line in a stand up role he was actually doing fairly well. Go figure, Tucker decided to not use what worked for him. NO SOUP FOR YOU!

The front office believes in Cutty, his coach does, and his team does too. I'm a fan of the Bears regardless of who is taking snaps, but I like this move. For everyone bitching about the dollar amount, this is the NFL going forward. You aren't going to be able to offer a talented quarterback peanuts. Pretty soon any decent QB not under a rookie deal is going to get PAID. If we didn't get give Jay this money, some other team would have been glad to pay him. I have no doubt that this offense is going to keep getting better and more experienced. Replace Garza, get Forte a cheaper backup, get another year under the belt for Wilson, Mills, and Long. Hopefully Emery and Trestman can retool the defense this year. I'm excited about the future.

The guaranteed money can only be spread over the first five years and I'm pretty sure it's been reported that it will be spread over the first three.

Yep you are right, I forget it can only be spread over 5 years. However if it's a signing bonus it has to be allocated over 5 years. You don't have the option to allocate it over shorter period unless you give Cutler a termination right after 3 years similar to what they did with Earl Bennett. Although, 54 million over 3 years is 18 million a year which would make for a massive cap hit. I can't imagine why the Bears would want to do that given all the defensive needs.

In any event, it will be interesting to see how the final salary cap numbers shake out and maybe some of that 54 million is guarantees over the base salary for the first 3 years or something like that.

While the contract is likely backloaded. Signing bonuses are only proratable over 5 yrs, so that $54M would equate to $10.8M/yr over the first 5 yrs

Yep forgot that it is 5 years. I am wondering now if some of the base salary is being guaranteed to make up some of that 54 million.

Why does Emery, or anyone, not give the contract details, when they eventually come out anyway?

Of Course, I'd like to see what Cutler is earning the first 4 years, and the incentives, bonuses and guarenteed.

Just based on the average (18/yr) I think 18 million per year is most definately overpaying Cutler based on his current preformance, trend and age, and especially number of years on the contract (seven). And how about a hometown discount? But without the per year amounts, that doesn't really say much.
