Reading Nick Swisher rumors to Cubs. That would be a bad move. Please don't do that. Please. Check out the teams he's been on. No thank you.

Ask people who have played or worked with him. No thank you. He was here in Chgo with the White Sox. Ask around.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Let's see....

Plays 1B/DH.....Not a need.

Hit .209 with 8 HR, and makes $14 million a year.

Yeah, GREAT idea!

Maybe they are thinking trade for EJAX with him. He has two years left at 15 mill per with a vesting option on if he has 550 AB's in 2016 and passes a physical. That could be your platoon/4th OF that can still play left or right if needed. That would be my only thinking.

If I am taking any ones 33 year old trash, I would like to see if the Dodgers would do something remotely close to what the Cubs did with Soriano, and kick the tires on Carl Crawford.

They could limit some of his play and platoon Olt or Ruggiano against lefties. He still has some speed left in his legs, and would be a much needed left handed 2-hole guy in the line-up. Plus, he has played for Maddon and Theo. :parrot:

Crawford has 3 years left on his contract and double the money left on his contract then Swisher.

And I said, if they would do something like the Cubs did with Soriano. Maybe if they were able to get him for 7-8 million per year, I'd think about it very hard.

Good Lord! Do you have to always sound like you-know-who Mr. Pessimistic? ;)

Are either of these two going to make spring cuts?

Olt needs to be NPB bound, or hope his degree from UConn and what money he's made sets him up.

If he is a major league player next year the cubs are not going for it next year. There's absolutely no point keeping him around. Cut your losses. Guy's a bust.

Never said for them to take on Jackson. The Cubs took a huge chunk of Soriano's contract and ate it for Corey Black. They ate Zambrano's for Volstad.

All I am saying is that MAYBE the Dodgers just want to cut loose of one of the outfielders (the other being Ethier) that doesn't figure into the everyday equation and save themselves 25 million give or take.

They have a surplus with Crawford, Ethier, and probable starters (Kemp, Pederson, and Puig). They will have over 105 million sitting on the bench, and they may just as well take that 8 million or so annual savings, and apply it to someone they can use like Russell Martin.

The Cubs did it twice with two players, and the Yankees if I recall, basically paid AJ Burnett to pitch in Pittsburgh for a couple of minor leaguers.

Large market teams can absorb big contracts that seemingly bust.

Just like the Cubs. Once again, they may opt to eat a good chunk of E-Jax's contract just to save themselves half of his remaining contract.

Who knows? It was basically saying that any righty that the Cubs have. Surely they will have one somewhere. My guess would be Ruggiano just because he put up respectable numbers in a short period of time before getting injured.

I don't think it would be that bad if the Cubs swapped Swisher for Jackson. Although the Cubs wouldn't do it straight up. Jackson is owed $26 million over the next 2 years, while Swisher is owed $44 million over the next 3. Money or something else would need to be added for that to work, otherwise the Cubs would just be better off eating the entirety of the Jackson deal.

Dodgers need 1 SP, with their available resources there is essentially a 0% chance that it would be someone like Jackson.

Well here's the thing though. What A.J. could bring is something a little deeper than just his left handed bat. I think he will be a manager some day and he has a ton of baseball knowledge.

Teaching is what I would want and an occasional left handed power hitting bat for a minimal contract. I like a guy that has been on or around winners. I could care less about much else as it's about moving the team forward which IMO, he would help that.

Also, as much as I would like to have Lester, I am going to temper my emotions on this. When the FO said in the next 12-15 months, that could very well mean a mid-tier arm now, and a TOR arm next year or at the deadline when quite possibly, better fits for the team might be there.

Way too many things have to align for all of this to come to fruition.

You're fucking kidding me right? A mid-tier arm?

The Cubs have PLENTY of cash to go out and get a TOR without even blinking and you think it would be okay if they just went out and picked up a mid-tier guy? Sorry but Maddon didn't sign on board for mid-tier pitchers.

Also, to all the fans of Shields, why? His Reg season ERA at 3.2 was decent but the guy got rocked in the postseason. I'm not sure he's the guy to take the Cubs to the promised land.

The Cubs had plenty of cash last year and missed out on Tanaka who was their target. They had plenty of money the year before and missed out on Sanchez who was their target. I am not saying they won't, but they left the door wide open with the 12-15 months thing.

Things happen. Just because they have money is no guarantee that they will land anybody.

All it takes is a team like the Angels, Dodgers, or Yankees to swoop in and mess things right up. And lets not forget Boston, and if the Giants fail to sign Panda, they could very well be a player. Throw a Lester/Shields/Scherzer along with Bumgarner at the top and they might be looking at 4 WS appearances in the last 6 years.

Furthermore, what the hell does the postseason have to do with anything? Lets chuck Clayton Kershaw right of the window with his pathetic postseason ERA shall we?

I don't know how long you have been a Cubs fan, but to the best of my knowledge, the ONLY top free agent EVER that the Cubs targeted and landed just retired today.

Also, the Cubs do have limitations as to how high they will go, and we have seen in the past that they do not put clauses in contracts where some other teams do.

Shields isn't Kershaw and to compare the two is ridiculous. What do you mean what the hell does postseason ERA have to do with anything? So you're not interested in signing people who can get the Cubs to the Series? Cool.

The Cubs can spend with the Angels, Dodgers, Giants, and Red Sox. If not, that means that TR is being cheap and the Cubs will continue to struggle getting people to buy their season ticket packages. The Season Ticket wait list jumped 30K spots during the past offseason so it appears people have just about enough of the small market mentality.

I guess you're the one who hasn't been a Cubs fan for long since you obviously forgot about the fucking awesome Andre Dawson that was signed in 87. He only went on to win the MVP that season but yea, not a big signing at all.

Ummm! No it is not ridiculous. You are the one who claimed the post season failures, and I simply stated that Kershaw suffered even worse, which is ridiculous to even point a small sample size in one year as the end all be all.

And please tell me when the Cubs have spent with the Dodgers, Giants, Angels and Red Sox? They spent to win in 07' and 08'. Other than that, the Cubs are notorious for not being big spenders, and they haven't spent since then either, nor did they spend to improve on those respective teams.

And Dawson? Really? He was 10 years in the league already and made a 1/2 million less with the Cubs (700K) than he was making in Montreal (1.2 Mil), who were notorious for not spending if that tells you anything. I never said the Cubs didn't sign players that didn't play well, but to suggest that Andre Dawson and his bad knees is comparative to the most coveted free agent on the market in 2007 is a bit naïve.

Kershaw had a small sample size, Shields did not. If the Cubs want to sign 1 TOR and a mid-tier (Shields), fine. But to simply go out and sign Shields as the big name and let Lester/Scherzer go to other teams, would be a massive failure and Maddon would probably be asking himself what he just got himself into.

You can't go back in Cubs history and talk about who spent for what. Different ownership, different front office. That being said I believe they will overpay to get Lester but if they don't land him they won't overpay to get Shields. I can't see them even getting into the Scherzer derby where Scott Boras has set the opening bell at 7 years/$230 million. The most likely scenario is that they get Lester and also sign a mid tier guy out of the bunch of Masterson, Liriano, Brandon McCarthy or Ervin Santana with McCarthy or Masterson being most likely due to the lack of qualifying offers. I think they'll make a run at Martin but unless his market value ends up less than what everyone thinks they won't land him. They're not going to give him 5 years/$75 mil I don't think but the money is there and I could be wrong. Now the entire thing changes if the Yankees are really going to stay out of the top 3 pitcher market. If that's the case all of Boras' Scherzer bluster of 7/$230 is wasted on deaf ears because only the Yankees would even start a conversation there. So if they're out and Scherzer could be had for 6 years $175 I think the Cubs could very well bid on both he and Lester landing at least one. Or they could still focus on Lester, let Boston or Texas grab Scherzer leaving Shields who I could see them looking at if he'd sign in the 4 years $85 mil range. Bottom line I think the Cubs are going to spend $60-$70 million maybe a little less the chips don't fall their way. They're never going to spend like Anaheim, LA or NY. I don't see the payroll exceeding $110 million this year and then holding steady at around $120 mil until the TV contract kicks in around 2019 at which time they'll be signing their own guys. Still $60 plus mil buys you guys. If you figure Lester will sign for about $26-$27 mil per, 2nd tier guys at $9-$11 per, Martin at about $13-$15 per then you can see a clear path to what they want to do. In the non-Yankees scenario they could sign Scherzer at $28 mil per and Shields at $20 per without batting an eye. You have to watch the guys with qualifying offers, the money involved and who's bidding on whom before you can get a clear picture but the Cubs will spend.

Age is holding Shields back from a big payday. He still IMO is #2 quality right now. He is not mid rotation yet. But that said I expect him to decline over this contract so that is a factor for not signing him.
