Why does not winning without the horses make him great?
What he did with the team he had made him great IMO.

I don't read into the theory like some others do. I am judging based on his decision making that I saw. Yeah he was only 73 over. But he also did not have the team to win more that that as most predicted.Again, I like him and I think he's a very good hire for the Sox. I also think he did a pretty good job with the Cubs, but great? The team won 73 games, only 2 games better than their Pythagorean record. That's overperforming for sure but maybe not great.
On another subject does anyone think the Mets should evaluate their medical/training staff after this season? Questions have dogged that area of their system for years and I think they can certainly be questioned again regarding Harvey, deGrom and Matz this year not to mention the setbacks of Wheeler from TJ. They have apparently had agents ask them directly about this issue before and it has been an issue in getting guys to sign there including, reportedly, Zobrist.

Rick Renteria was a good motivator and players like him. His in game coaching needs more experience because he made a good amount of weird moves. Castro really liked him and Castro progressed under him. They say he is terrific with Hispanic players because he is bilingual.
Rationalization is a poor coping mechanism.Seems more like Joe than perhaps you realize.

I hope it's a good hire too.The thing about weird moves is the experience behind them. I think Maddon has more than enough experience to go off script than Renteria had or has. When I used to manage people I always said to them that breaking the rules was fine as long as you knew the rules in the first place like the back of your hand and could come up with a logical and actionable reason for breaking them. Renteria doesn't know those managerial "rules" well enough to break them with consistent success yet. Maybe next year will change that. Listen, I like the guy and was perfectly fine with moving forward with him before Maddon became available, I think your team has made a good hire. Now lets see what they give him to work with.

Back to what you said earlier in the reply, Rick knows the rules on the same level as any manager with experience which Rick has. (He's not Robin or a few others). So years of doing it at the majors might right or wrong buy you grace, but the moves are what they are regardless of who makes them.
The only difference is in knowing probabilities and where you make your unorthodox moves. I hate the cookie cutter manager trend of recent years.

Thanks for being so helpful...:smh:
If he had Sale at the top of the rotation I would agree.
The Cubs are far from perfect. The strike out too much. Get into slumps like all teams. Lack a dominate leader of the rotation after Jake regressed.
All that said they won over 100 games. Joe got the talent he had and made it work. Moved guys around to get past injury with out a hitch.
The only bump in the road was when Fowler went down. That was their worst stretch. A good arguement can be made that they resign Dexter just for that stretch vs trying to go another direction.
Right now Joe has to be the best manager in the game and more up and coming managers should use him as a role model on how to approach managing.
