He'd rather fields ended up bad so he can carry on his eeyore routine, than for that trade to work out and fields be a franchise qb.

...or Fields could just throw for more than 100 yards and score more TDs than INTs and fumbles.

This is what you get by over evaluating your own draft picks and paying them early. The point of paying early is to get a better deal but instead Pace gives tag # deals early, after players have career years. EJ is fine at FS but he's WAY overpaid with ramifications elsewhere. Cody has been an average starter at best this year which is fine and functional at 1/2 his pay but not playing anywhere near his deal. These contracts are about hubris/confirmation bias, thinking your smarter than everyone else. The same things giving Pace too much patience with other aspects of the team of his doing is helping to create these cap problems.
Monday morning QB is always fun to play.

Jackson is playing poorly now but Pace this time made the right decision with his contract. Jackson was playing like an all pro and should have been rewarded

He had a year left on his rookie deal and got the highest ever safety contract in history when signed... after a year with 2 INTs. He was the very 1st player of the 2017 draft to sign an extension. He had a year left on his rookie deal and could have have been franchised twice if he tried to walk and we'd still have paid him less by the time he'll get released to save money because the likely result of this contract is that he'll get released before the contract runs its course. Monday morning QB? Sure but this is Pace's job and you get evaluated on results. The reason you resign guys tp extensions early is to both reward them and also to save overall money to offset inflation. In this case he got resigned after a good (not great) year where he made the Pro Bowl as a reserve due somewhat to the previous years play to the highest safety contract in history.

Here's 3 different sources for safety rankings from the period between the 2019 and 2020 seasons when the contract got inked.

That was then and he's not been as good since but he's still a viable safety and should break out of this INT slump. He deserved an extension. Just not that one at that time.
